Caravan Security

Hi, We have recently changed from Motorhome back to Caravan, and have purchased a second hand van (Abbey Spectrum 2 berth)

 

The paperwork that came with it claims that there is a Phantom Tracker system installed, but the previous owner didnt renew the annual fee so it has lapsed. We asked to restart it, but it appears that the device needs to be replaced as it is no longer functional.(suggested battery was flat).

A replacement device is due to be fitted on tuesday and we then start the annual charge.

 

Has anyone had any experience of the system, and what are the impressions. We also have the CRIS registration, Alko Security on both the wheel and Hitch, and have just received the Cris Extra pack ( a load of microdots to stick around the van as well as their electronic tag to secrete away in the van in a position that can be scanned by Police from outside the van.

 

With all this security, are we "fully protected" or do the theives know the answers. Are we able to get reduced insurance premiums any where and if so who gives the best discount.

Hi Tony,

We have just gone the same route from a MH to a caravan. The MH had a Phantom fitted from new (7 years) but we were lucky and never needed it. Phantom do ask you to let them know if you are going abroad and every time we checked with them they knew precisely where we were and where we had been for the previous few days! We have another Phantom in the new van and carried the remaining 3 years contract over from the MH as the buyers were not interested. As far as we are concerned the Company has done everything we asked of them and the unit in the MH we very reliable, Apparently they also have a good recovery record. We do not advertise that the Phantom is fitted as tealeaves know more about these things than we do so may be able to disable it if they know it is fitted, however we have looked all over the van and can't find it so it's probably inaccessible to a quick disable job.
