British Steel on brink of collapse

Bulletguy

Recommended Posts

British Steel is on the brink of collapse amid growing signs that an emergency government loan would fail to materialise, putting a total of close to 25,000 jobs at risk.

A slump in orders from European customers amid uncertainty about potential trading arrangements with the EU in the event of a no-deal Brexit was among the factors responsible for the company's deteriorating performance.

So another "success" looming for "the will of the people" upset these job losses just aren't happening quick enough. *-)

Shameful that you're so desperate to deflect away from what they themselves clearly said in the article;

A slump in orders from European customers amid uncertainty about potential trading arrangements with the EU in the event of a no-deal Brexit was among the factors responsible for the company's deteriorating performance.

British Steel has also been adversely affected by sterling's weakness and the escalating tariff war between the US and China, analysts said.

I seem to remember the pre-referendum bullcrap the Leave lot were peddling, 'a Remain vote will end the UK steel industry'. In fact Farage even tweeted it back in 2016.

https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/national/17657074.farage-reminded-of-claim-remain-vote-would-be-end-of-british-steel-industry/

So Scunthorpe chose to believe charalatans like Johnson, Farage and co, the promises of unicorns, and voted 66% Leave in the referendum, effectively voting themselves out of a job. Mind blowing insanity. My sympathy lies with the 34% in Scunthorpe which, already a depressed area, will end up a ghost town. 200 years of industry wiped out by the sheer madness of silly turkeys voting for Christmas.

Certainly the private equity group who own British Steel bear some responsibility as it's clear they've asset stripped and milked it for millions and have history of doing this with other companies.

In amongst your usual attempt to blame everything on Brexit, you actually hit upon the truth ;-) ........

I don't blame everything on Brexit but to deny it never played a part as a contributing factor as you continually do with the losses of numerous UK businesses and jobs, is just burying your head pretending it never happened.

I notice you had nothing to say on your Brexit Party chum Farage who told voters "a Remain vote would end the UK steel industry". A bit like his infamous call for a second referendum if it went 52-48 to Remain. These statements quickly get swept under the carpet as Brexiteers prefer to remain firmly in a state of denial.

Greybull Capital is a private equity group. Perhaps had Tory PM Heath still been around, what he'd describe as "the unacceptable face of capitalism". Awkward for you capitalists eh?

The thing is once the infrastructure to produce steel

Has gone that’s it finished...

I heard one commentator yesterday say that China produced more

Steel last year than British steel has produced ever

If that is true it’s staggering

Actually I think its produced more steel in the last two years than Britain has ever, not just British Steel.

Apparently Brexit hasn't helped due to uncertainty on Tariffs but I suspect it was fooked anyway. One things for sure we would stand less chance of been flattened by countries like China inside the EU than out of it. Europe together is a big economy and powerful, Britain on its own compared to somewhere like china is simply insignificant. Manufacturing is finished here now if Brexit goes ahead. Whats left of it.

My first ever job was at Britisih Steel after I left college. I fudged my way in for a summer short term contract as a "Financial Analyst" in 1988. (lol) Worra Joke that place was. Virtually none of it was computerised and I spent three months transferring all their stuff to spreadsheets. They were haemorrhaging money left right and centre then. Maybe I set the spreadsheets up all wrong and its my fault.

It's worth remembering UK Tory gov under Cameron vetoed EU plans to put tougher tariffs on Chinese steel.

It's also worth noting steel production has other costs :-| ...........

Perhaps this could be a blessing in disguise in the long term, providing its managed sensibly and the towns not left to die like the coal mining towns were ;-) .........

Not sure what your sad emoticon represents.....Scunthorpe being named as the second most polluted town in UK, or the financial cost of cleaning up the crap they've chucked out in air for years? I can't think you'd be content to stay stuck with the former so it must be the latter......of which you must be eternally grateful to the EU for implementing carbon emissions controls?

So you feel the 'other costs' you linked to are open to debate and of little importance?
