Cash for Votes

Funny isn't it that while it's illegal to buy votes, the Government can negotiate with the DUP and is not acting illegally, even though it's widely assumed that promises of financial and other benefits are being made!

And the DUP are upset because they aren't getting the respect they feel they deserve and think the Government are in chaos and behaving like amateurs in their dealings with them.

You just couldn't write this stuff as fiction and expect to have it believed as credible!

I realize the DUP won't want to see Labour in power, but the Tories still need the DUP more than the DUP need the Tories?

So how much are their votes worth to the Tories when its someone else s money they are spending?

As I recall, Government spending per head of population was already north of £1k higher in Scotland than in England before Cameron bunged them some more when they looked like voting against him in their independence referendum. So perhaps the DUP can hold out for more?

I think its illegal for them to buy votes with their own money, but not illegal to buy their votes with our money *-)

You could say Corbyn was bribing voters during the election campaign but that was for the whole country - not using money from the whole country to bribe just one part like Cameron did with Scotland.

Not clear to me that there is any difference, morally speaking.  Yet politics is the art of the possible and a pragmatic approach is often necessary, otherwise there would have been no God Friday Agreement on Northern Ireland for example and conflicts would only ever be resolved by a fight to the finish.

One of the limitations of our system of democracy is that it can deliver uncertain or even contradictory results - what does the General Election result mean for Brexit if the electorate seem to want the best of both worlds and have both control of our borders and freedom to trade with the EU, when for the government tasked with delivering this, it is clearly mission impossible.

Not as I recall - but I got so fed up with the silly claims being made by both sides that I stopped listening!

And so what?  If our Brexit negotiator are being told by the electorate to get the best of both worlds when the EU have already made it clear that we can't have that, it clearly isn't going to happen is it?

So the DUP want £2bn (£166,666,667) per vote. Plus writing off the bill for their heating oil fiasco. How much was that?

See that's what happens when people vote for Labour ;-) .........They get a hard right coalition >:-) .......

Interests of the Tory party put before the interests of the country as usual.

But the DUP were never going to bring a Tory Government down and hand the keys to Jeremy Corbyn.

So bunging them £100million plus per vote doesn't inspire much confidence in her Brexit negotiating skills :-S

It might not be just £1 billion though as the SNP are already claiming that Barnett formula rules now should entitle them to £2.9 billion and no doubt Wales will be demanding a lump sum as well.

Some are saying its in breach of the Good Friday agreement as well. There could be serious consequences

Dave. You cannot blame young voters for this either or Labour. The buck for all this stops totally with Brexit.

No, it's the price for propping up a rocky conservative government. No-one mentioned an extra £1 billion before they called their snap election and lost their majority. I think it's a misappropriation of public funds, as the only reason for the payments is to keep the present government, wounded at its own hand, in place. It isn't the end of the road either, as the same money grubbing mentality will afflict the DUP every time the government needs their vote to get its way. It stinks.

Sadly True.

Our Brexit negotiators outwitted by the Irish.

They might start asking for their bungs in Dollars, as the pound won't be worth much at this rate :-S
