Decision made

:'( I decided last night that a motorcaravan isn't for us! We have been looking for 2 years: I've seen 3 models I really like, hubby keeps stalling. It's a lot of money to make a mistake with! I would miss the easiness of jumping into the car to visit tourist attractions. We read in the magazines that some car parks aren't accessible with a 'van and those which are may be some way from town. We read of many problems; some niggles, others quite serious faults on 'vans which the owners have difficulty resolving with the dealerships: someone we know has an on-going hassle at present. It seems the dealership would rather do habitation checks on recently sold motorcaravans than put correct the faults pointed out on his (March) paid-for 'van [over £36,000]. At my time of life I do not do hassle ;-) Storage might be a problem; as might neighbours when we park outside the house. Etc. etc............. As this country is turning out young people from school who cannot read, write or add up our servicing industry is going to be sadly lacking! Even with the input of East European workers, for a few years it's going to take longer to get anything done! So off to a good hotel - if you see someone waving at those of you who have made the decision, it will be ME :-D

Sorry you have decided not to go for a motorhome Lizzy, at least for now. As you said, its a lot of money and something you must both be sure of. Things are not that bad, and you must remember that the majority of postings are problems relating to motorhomes which is what this forum is all about I suppose, and there are countless others with no problems at all. Just to echo Carols sentiments and hope you continue to use this forum ,and always nice to hear from you. Howard.

Seems a bit sad Lizzy. Mind you £36K buys a lot of hotel accomadation. I have to say that being someone who was happy in a tent for many years and went over to having a caravan about four years ago I cannot see that attraction of a motorhome. Not wishing for any negativity here - but the thought of having to put everything away just to pop down the shops or do a bit of sightseeing is not attractive. Pulling over virtualy anywhere for the night has its advantages I suppose. What about getting a small caravan?

We have a Volvo 940 so hubby hitched up a largish van with the help of a local company and foudn that he doesn't like the up and down movement on the front of the car as the van bounces about behind. It would be much better for us! I don't like the idea of having to tidy up just to go shopping! One of the reasons we discussed last night ....... late into the night ........ We used to tent too *-) but I'm too old for sleeping on the floor these days so gave our 4 berth to the Scouts after their hut was burnt down. Off to a hotel tomorrow night in Princes Risborough area ready for archery on Sunday. Will stick around to keep up with threads ;-) :-D

  • 3 weeks later...
PHEW! was that fatalistic or what *-) Last week my beloved Escort failed her MOT - lots of welding required to get her road-worthy for a few more months. SO: have to search for a different car! Good job we hadn't bought a motorcaravan at this point ........... went looking at Peugeot 407/306 yesterday; Toyota Corolla; Ford Fusion but the boot isn't large enough though the new colours are *great* :-> ....... we need boot space to load suitcase, archery and/or fishing gear .......... it must have AC as the workhorse of a Volvo estate doesn't .........
