Falklands concern over Brexit and single market

The Falkland Islands’ government has sounded the alarm over leaving the EU single market, warning that the territory would take a “catastrophic” economic hit if it faces new tariffs and quotas as a result of Brexit.

Representatives of the islands’ fishing industry and government have been lobbying British politicians over the dangers of losing seamless access to the EU – where the vast majority of the territory’s exports go.

The Falkland Islands’ fishing industry exports almost exclusively to the EU, with 94 per cent of fishing exports by bulk heading to the single market in 2017. Fishing accounts for 41 per cent of the islands’ exports and two-thirds of the corporation tax received by its treasury.

I expect the Tories will just bung them some more English taxpayer's money in one guise or another.

Apparently when Thatcher asked how the Falklands could be managed after the war she was told it would only work with socialist subsidies, because it wouldn't be able to support itself.

So she quietly accepted

The nature of our future trading relationship with the EU wasn’t on the ballot paper so I expect to see many groups arguing for the trading relationship that best serves their own interests. I presume Brexiteers are equally interested in getting deal that best serves our economic needs so I fail to see how the article could be viewed as remoaner propaganda.

I note that the islanders weren’t entitled to vote in the referendum so the only way for them to look after their interests is to lobby for the kind of deal that suits their economic needs.

What kind of a democracy would object to people campaigning against something they dont believe in and trying to persuade the opposition to change their views / minds? Not one I would want to live in. Yet in this "new order" The Brexiteers are trying to bestow upon us we are branded traitors, remoaners and enemies of the people. Even the very heart of our democracy the Lords and Parliament who the Brexiteers wanted to hand back control of our laws to have been branded so when the very people they championed to "take back control" have not gone along with the rabid Brexiteers plans. If anything its these rabid Brexiteers that are a threat to our democracy. Its their way or the highway. Not while Im still breathing it isnt.

No because an election is every five years in the UK unless there is an opportunity earlier. The referendum was supposedly a one off vote but it wasn't binding like an election so we have every right to try and oppose it or shape the outcome until its actually carried out. If it was the same we would have left the very next day with an opportunity to vote again in five years time during which time we, the opposition would carry out our campaigning.

There are some of us that also believe that it was a complete disgrace to our democracy and democracies darkest hour in the UK this is why the courts have had to be involved because of how undemocratic and illegal it turns out both the campaign and the delivery of Brexit has been.

Sorry to burst your bubble PJay but it's a factual reality and nothing to do with Remain 'scandal', but yes everything to do with democracy! You can't pick and choose which "bits" of democracy you like or don't like otherwise that wouldn't be democratic would it? You don't get to have all your own way as you're beginning to see.

Bib.....in exactly the same way as the NHS of course but that was used in the campaign to persuade Brexiters to vote Leave. Now faced with some very harsh realities of the outcome, the squealing starts. I've yet to read one post on any forum from a Brexit voter saying they didn't expect such consequences so must accept what's now happening but read many saying 'had they known about [insert item of choice] they'd not have voted Leave'.

Gibraltar also has problems but at least they had a vote....95.91% Remain. As you rightly say the Falkland islanders had no vote at all and given the bitterly fought war which cost the lives of over 250 British forces including three islanders, i would have thought Brexit voters would not now seek to deny islanders a decent and workable future. Brexit has certainly brought the worst out in people with self-indulgent ugliness.

There is some very good information on the FI website here; https://www.falklands.gov.fk/

Other 'forgotten' BOT countries overlooked by Brexit who rely on tariff free trade with EU not to mention EU funding they will now lose. Some of these islands were recently devastated by hurricane Irma and UK gov has been slow to act with many islanders still homeless.

Who was it that said of Remain won by say 52% to 48% it would be unfinished business? Oh yeah, Nigel Farage. So is Nigel a whinger as well then? He whinged on enough about us leaving and I suspect he would have whinged on a fair bit more after had "Vote Leave" narrowly lost the referendum.

I prefer to call it campaigning. Campaigning to get the public and the government to see sense before its too late.

The way I see it now it can only go two or three different ways. We end up with a deal thats so restricted there is no point in leaving. If that happens then I hope the public get a chance to vote on that deal with an option to accept it or reject it and remain. You can chuck in an option to leave with nothing if you like but hardly anyone would vote for that.

To be honest, I am coming round to thinking if we end up with a choice of leaving in name only or crashing out with no deal then I hope its the later as forever and a day the Brexiteers will blame Brexit being a bit naff on the fact that they were not allowed a full fat Brexit. Crash out and it will be nobodies fault but the Brexiteers when it all goes tits up. It will be so massively destructive but we will be hammering to get back in within two years and there will be nobody to blame but the Brexiteers.

I hope that does not happen, I hope enough people change their minds and the government do something about it but I am not holding my breath. Meanwhile, ill continue trying to change peoples minds on Brexit. Call it whinging if you like, Im not bothered.

Nigel wasn't part of the official Leave team ... I suspect though what he meant with unfinished business would be he'd carry on campaigning to leave while not whinging over the lies told during the referendum or questioning the legality of the referendum process or making any phoney excuse for losing ... Bit of a difference

1. Because we havent left yet. All still to play for IMO and if the public changes its mind in sufficient numbers or we get a vote on the final deal everything could change. If we do leave the way you want us to I doubt it will be four years let alone forty before we are knocking on the door to be let back in.

2. Its a disgrace to our democracy because of the undemocratic way in which it was won. Lies, lies and more lies and no it wasnt a case of lies on both sides but how many times have we been round this merry go round?

3. I dont want to go against the will of the people. I want the will of the people to change and for them to rise up and put an end to Brexit and see it for what it is themselves. All I am asking is we get the opportunity to re-engage and a say on the destination at the end of it all before we go.

I do not know where you are getting this 13% figure from. 53% are now in favour of a vote on the final deal with only 22% against, the rest unsure so a 22 point lead in favour so far and its growing.

So you're convinced those 53% will vote to stay? ;-) .........Funny I thought it was only 13% that wanted to stop Brexit >:-) ........

But I'll except another vote if it's ......

Nope, its 53% in favour of vote on the deal and its rising. Its been covered right across the media. Well maybe not the rags you read. (lol)

Your options are pointless though, same as the original one that was proposed that Parliament would get. Its not meaningful. Take or leave it is not an option. Its flawed for you anyway as what if the deal is staying in the single market and customs union so leaving in name only or walking away with nothing? The public will end up voting for the former. Would you accept that? May as well stay in if thats the case so there would have to be a remain option.
