There is bound to be a rise in Far right Populist parties in Europe. People are pished off about immigration, refugees etc and probably in Italy's case the Euro.

I dont know why you would think its a good thing though Antony to encourage the rise of such parties in an attempt to break Europe apart and promote far right leaders into power. Just look at history to find out how it always ends.

You might not like the EU but there is no denying its helped keep the peace in Europe more or less since the second world war. Break it apart and put these nutters in charge in every country and how long before they start lobbing bombs at each other or creating the sort of genocide we saw in Bosnia etc?

The Populist idea might seem like a good idea for the little man to fight back because he blames all his ills on Globalisation but the world has changed. Its a smaller global platform now and we just need to get used to it. Voting for extremists will only make life worse long term.

I would call most of the far right parties and organisations you and a few others have got excited about clamouring for power in Europe extremists.

Really ? I thought that was the Yanks primarily with minor support from NATO and given their preference for any war that is not on their doorstep they must have been mighty pleased to see the communist CCCP empire implode?

I detect a note of disingenuous sarcasm.

They are fascists and openly admit it. An essential 'ingredient' to fascism is hatred of a race or ethnicity and whipping up xenophobia. Hitler and Mussolini were there long before them.......and history tells us how all that ended for them.

Meek minds are easily warped and misled. Italians are just trying a rebranded fascism......but it's still fascism.

But not an anti-semitic party a little closer to home who's top table have openly expressed support of terrorists ... Interesting if not confusing

None by your standards ;-)

Would you care to explain what you mean with that John ... Don't particularly care for being called an extremist and not just that your insinuating I'm worse than an extremist ... I'd appreciate an explanation

politicians in general - not keeping in touch with their electorates.

:-(

Tories don't need to - just borrow money and bribe them

Interesting graph which if anything highlights the danger of Labour's policies.

What is clear is that from 2001 the debt was creeping inexorably upwards. In the last six years of a Labour government the debt rose two and a half times from under £400 billion to over one trillion.

Does anyone seriously believe that after the biggest financial crash in decades that Labour, if still in power, would have reduced the massive growth that it had already started?

The Tories took over in 2010 inheriting an economy that was in trouble, exemplified by the Labour minister's quote: "There's no money left."

Despite this and despite having to deal with the aftermath of Labour and the recession, in a similar six-year period the debt has only grown by 50%. That's one half as opposed to Labour's growth of two and a half.

Since then the Tories have now balanced the books, something Labour never did.

If Labour had won the last two elections we can guarantee that the increase in the National Debt would be a lot more than the 50% under the Tories.

The increase of two and a half times that Labour's policies created would make today's figures look like small change.

Thank God that the Tories have been in office for the last six years.

Can't see how they would buy the electorates in Europe and the USA who are disenchanted enough to vote for Brexit and Trump - and right wing parties throughout Europe

That over ripe old cherry of a graph keeps being dragged out by John who is so desperate to get Corbyn wrecking the economy in the good old Labour way .

When you consider that tax income has risen too in recent years as more people stop being benefit claimants and start being contributor tax payers then the ability to service and repay the debt becomes the more relevent data.

Lots of data on t'internet, some of it considerably less biased and one sided than we see regurgitated above and I am not going to insult anyone's intelligence by quoting any, so whilst that kind of national debt is not good to see the rate of increase in debt since the last years of Mr Prudence's reign has been greatly stemmed.

You might moan about austerity but the alternatives are either even greater austerity or much higher taxation or gradually chip away at the debt - take your preference.

England, like so many other countries, was a more pleasant place before mass immigration swamped it so rather than the oh so convemient racist term beloved by the foreigneer worshippers I prefer patriot and self preservationist as being more realistic and fortunately I am far from alone.

Exactly what and where is this "mass immigration"? :-S

We need migrants to do jobs British won't do. Post Brexit EU workers have been hounded out so companies will turn elsewhere to seek workers......or ship their business out altogether. NHS have already started to recruit non-EU as it now faces a staffing crisis.

Look again and get a calculator if you can't do the sums. The debt took off when Darling had to bail out all the Building Societies the Tories had demutualised and bankrupted - remember Northern Rock etc?

Despite that Labour's average annual borrowing was still far less than the Tories because -

Gideon Osborne's average borrowing was about 6 times that of Gordon Brown.
