I hav'nt been on forum for ages, years proberbly but I seem to remember a chap who took a very distastful veiw of people who did the odd wild camp while traveling through Europe, Spain in particular. I think he refered to them as spongers and scroungers. Yet seem to think it was OK to "wild camp in Weymouth" As I am in Spain at present and missed the outcome. Can anyone enlighten me. I,m sure it was in MMM letters and the chaps name was Mr Eiderdown Knotwood or something like that. ;-)

Well, it wasn't me but I do have sympathy with his argument. I've no problem with people who 'wild camp' for the oddnight when they're en-route, as long as they do so responsibly. What I do have a problem with though is those who think that it's their right to 'wild camp' everywhere and anytime.

Regrettably, most of these people are not doing it out of a spirit of adventure but from a desire to save a few pounds. It is my opinion that ultimately, their behaviour will harm the lot of us as eventually, the authorities will clamp down.

I was browsing another forum a few days ago and one thread mentioned a town in Spain, where the police simply got fed up with all the motorhomes on the beach and cleared away the lot of them. Another correspondent pointed out that a number of motorhomes had started to 'wild camp' in residential streets! You can imagine how the homeowners fee about this and how they now feel about motorhomers in general.

When I first used this forum I mistakenly assumed that it may be something about motorhomes that brings out a certain selfishness in people - I now think that I was mistaken and that the people in question are probably simply tight-fisted and will do anything to save a few bob, regardless of their effect on others.

Fortunately, I'm also fairly convinced that they are a tiny minority and the majority of motorhomes are sensible people who do care about their actions and the effect on others.

Oh dear here we go again.

One of the main joys of so called 'wild camping' is that one does not have to break off the days touring and spend time and fuel trundling several miles to a 'convenient' site and then trundle back on route in the morning.

Even worse, from my point of view, must be to be on a site for several days and have to return along the same roads to the same spot each evening.

I can understand that this may well be the philosophy of many ex tuggers as that is the way they have always done it before, and maybe they know no different, and maybe they are very happy with it that way.

This is NOT a critiscism of their way, just as I do not expect them to critiscise my way as we all use our vans to suit our own tastes.

That flexibility is one of the huge benefits of some of us so called 'tight fisted' people spending huge sums of money on a 'van in the first place.

To then be shoehorned on to a camp site in a 'one size fits all manner' is not my scene - but good luck to those who do enjoy it as we all have different views on how to enjoy our vans and who is tosay who is right or wrong - certainly not me.

When we wild camp we only ever stay one night - we might go away and come back the next night - but we don't remain all day and when we leave the spot is often magically tidier than when we arrived.

The fact that it saves both site fees and fuel is a great bonus but that said I am very happy to pay for overnight parking, in fact I would rather pay to secure my tenure, if the location is desirable.

Far from clamping down there seems to be some slight tendency for a few enlightened councils to make places available for us as they are starting to realise that we have money to spend in their towns.

I totally agree with the actions of Spanish police in moving on those who abuse their tolerance to the inconvenience of the residents and other tourists.

It is not motor caravanners who are selfish - it is the whole UK population - of whom some just happen to own a motor caravan and far too many people seem to know their rights in this country but not enough seem to know their responsibilities.

The attitude in France and Germany is certainly different where towns and villages often want our presence so much they provide free or heavily subsidised facilities at their own expense for us.

So does that make them all wrong and our local government right? I think not.

Thanks for your honest and polite reply. so there I have it in a nut shell (or case) a veiw from both sides and I will say that I am at present on a sight near Cadiz but did wild camp on the way down through Europe so I can understand both veiws. PS what ever did happen to Mr Eiderdown? ;-)

Mr eiderdown probably got updated to Mr Duvet and is now propably either quietly sitting on top of a wardrobe somewhere or keeping a horse warm somewhere else.

Can't help but wish I too was in Cadiz. Enjoy.

Now now Peter - I recently got a bol####ing from the Mod for winding up Frank so you had better watch your step or the Wrath of Khan will descend upon you too.

Unless I'm absolutely certain I give people the benefit of the doubt and I answered his question as I thought that he wanted it answered. And it appears that I wasn't the only one who took the bait, if bait it was!

So why am I the only one being pilloried? Let's face it, there's stranger names than Eiderdown Knotwood on this site!

I have to say though that I love a bit of fun, but one thing that I really hate, and I'm not sure that this is the case, is people who do post simply to wind up others. I find that kind of humour unpleasant and people like that usually end up showing their true and usually nasty colours. As evidence of this look no further than our twisted poster and his dead people and pornography threads.

Look, I'm not having a go at any individual in in this thread. If you want to, that's up to you but I'm not going to get into any arguments. I've said or done nothing here to warrant any abuse.

Frank, if you think I'm having a go at you then you don't have the sense of humour I thought you had. If I've upset you in any way with a bit of tongue firmly in cheek fun, then I'm sorry and it won't happen again.

peter - 2007-01-29 11:10 PM Frank, if you think I'm having a go at you then you don't have the sense of humour I thought you had. If I've upset you in any way with a bit of tongue firmly in cheek fun, then I'm sorry and it won't happen again. Peter

Peter, my reference to people who wind up was not in any way aimed at you. I was suggesting that if the original poster was a deliberate wind up then it's the sort of thing that I simply don't like. I've always thought that posts which are deliberately placed to wind up people show a cruel sense of humour. This original thread for instance may well be genuine and I treated it as such.

I've actually always found you to be one of the nicer people on this site and I'm not in any way falling out with you.

I hope that you noticed that I have not responded in anyway to starspirit's reply, which I could easily have done, but I'm being a good boy!

Nevertheless, if it is a spoof posting (and I'm not convinced) it is a little galling that two of us responded seriously to it but only one is having the p*ss taken out of him!

But of course as has been so politely pointed out, I'm a Telegraph reading trotter.

Frank...........I hope your not suggesting I take the p*ss out of starspirit. :D

Appreciate your comments about me, I am a bit of a leg puller.

I think your'e quite a nice chap as well.

You might be right about the original poster though, we will see.

Good morning everyone. Sorry I could'nt join you last night, we were out enjoying ourselfs. Quite innocent, a meal nice bottle of wine. (Actually the meal was'nt that good) but the company was excellent. Well you all seem to have got on well together. I must say I find it rather sad that somebody should get so bitter and twisted about an every day item among motorhome owners/users. And then to turn on the original poster with words such as "dead people, pornography, nasty colours and weirdo!" OK, I know some of it was in jest, very good. The Nazi's had people murdered on such inuendo. I think one of you thought you were duped and then pillaried by the others so you lost that battle and turned on me as I was'nt there to defend myself.Well I do have a sense of humour very similar to one or two of you. I would'nt say it was dark or nasty but I should leave that desicion to one of you. Try MMM Sep. 2004, Letters Biffo Johnson "I waive my right to wave" that's me and my sense of humour. As for theads yes I know they are there. My partner works at Christchurch Oxford and she was reserching a Miss Norma Jean. Is that ok by you? My reference to who I now no to be Mr B Underdown (NOT UNDERWOOD) as he signs his self, is the MMM travel consoltant for Spain. As one of you guessed just a bit tounge in cheek. I don't know why you were falling over each other to appease one among you. He deserved what he got for being so obnoxious. An apology to me from one particular individual would'nt go amiss though that might be to much pride to swollow. I still think it was all a bit of fun and thank you for your veiws on my original point. My conclusion is : It's OK but be descreet, don't over stay your welcome and clean up. ;-)

If you posted simply to wind people up and to stir things then I'm afraid that in my book, you're the obnoxious one! Apart from that I can't really make a lot of sense from your ramblings.

I'm sorry if in originally trying to help you I made a mistake  - and my comments about nasty posters and dead people were aimed not a you but at another poster who appears to be even worse than you - unless of course you're him!

Finally, what is it about the motorhoming community that seems to attract these nasty people, whose sole aim appears to be to try and trip up and embarrass others?

I contribute to two other forums on very different subjects and have done for some years. In all that time I have never ever come across anyone who does this kind of thing. It's very sad that people feel that they have to do something like this to brighten their lives.

I'm out of this thread!

Years ago, in tent days, driving through France with some friends it got really late, foul weather had really closed in and there was no chance of reaching our campsite. Dog tired, we looked for any little lane where we might find a small field for emergency "wild camping". We pitched by feel and the feeble lights of our Mini and eventually tumbled into our sleeping bags in thick fog at about 3am.

Around lunch time the next day when we finally emerged the weather was beautiful. The fog had lifted - most unfortunate because we had parked and pitched on the lawn of a posh detached house, just feet away from their front door. Fortunately we hadn't dug latrines!
