One for the intellectuals

ON THE ONE HAND ...

... it MUST be "slow down," since you also "speed up."

BUT ON THE OTHER HAND ...

... we also "EASE UP" (well, some people do) and (in my case at least) "PUT OUR FOOT (or even the Hammer) DOWN," so "slow up" would fit.

HOWEVER you still wouldn't say "speed down," so on balance I'll go for "slow down," although some of those who know me would say it's a foreign concept to me anyway.

I can hardly claim to be an intellectual, but surely it is;-

Slowing down

Speeding up

Anything different could maybe seem to be contradictory and evidence of yet further abuse of the English language and dumbing down of the country?

According to Cambridge Dictionaries Online it can be either:

slow down/up phrasal verb

to become slower, or to make someone or something become slower:

Slow down, you two, you're walking too fast!

If I run with Christina she tends to slow me down.

We slowed up when we saw the police.

I think Twooks meant the Cambridge southerners, Rich? *-)

They are Easterners not Southerners surely?

Well, it's south of me - not sure where Twooks is.

In her own little world along with an interesting Scotsman I think Janine!

I just wish I were an interesting Scotsman Jackie!

Come to think of it just being an interesting Englishman would be a start for me!

Better I say that than someone else!
