Cam Belt Change Price

Thought the following info maybe useful for people in Bristol and the South West area

 

Just had our cam belt changed on our X290 Auto Trail Apache 700 at Fleet Autocentre https://www.yell.com/biz/fleet-autocentre-ltd-weston-super-mare-9747675/

for £340.18. Hutton Fiat (Main dealer quoted £554 which is worrying as they occasionally sub the work out Fleet Autocentre. The invoice showed 3.55 hours labour charge.

 

This did not include the water pump (although they did offer at additional cost without me prompting them) as the van has only done 17000 miles in 4.8 year life and I am intending to sell it in the near future which was going to this spring but now will probably be next spring.

When my 2015 Ducato X290 was in for service at a Fiat Professional agent on March 13 I asked for a quotation for a timing-belt replacement.

 

Two quotations were provided - one involving 'genuine' Fiat parts and the other 'pattern' parts and in both instances the water-pump would also be changed.

 

The labour charge in both cases was £351.00

 

The cost of the Fiat parts was £503.54 - (Total cost of task - £854.54)

 

The cost of the pattern parts was £253.54 - (Total cost of task - £604.54)

 

Cost of Fiat water-pump - £184.50

 

Cost of pattern water-pump - £65.78

 

 

All above prices are VAT inclusive

..that seems a little over the top, Derek.

 

I can find several sources that quote the rrp for the genuine Fiat (FCA) belt kit (no pump) at £191.36 incl vat , but are selling the same at anything down to £110 inclusive.

 

An OE water pump (Iveco badged, but what a Fiat dealer will fit, with a Fiat part number) is around £240 inc (rrp), but can be had at around half that.

 

I must say that, if I'm still around when my van needs the change, I might be tempted to source the (genuine, or possiby Gates) parts myself, and find a decent independent to do it.

Further to my OP the belt kit cost including VAT was £148.67. They offered me the option to uses a belt in a Fiat badged bag but were adament that the quality was no different and most likely produced by the same manufacturer as the packaging looked identical. Unlikely that any of them have been manufactured by Fiat in their factory as it is a specialised item.

 

They have a good reputation and it would not be in their interest to use sub standard parts.

 

I can imagine there would be a lot of third party ones out there in counterfeit packaging that looks identical to Fiat badged ones, just like the Samsung phone cases that have even turned up on a couple of well known online shopping websites.

Quite common and very similar to a "Ford" rear wheel bearing assembly that I bought a few years ago.

 

£176 from a Ford dealer.

 

£82 from a motor factors.

 

Both completely identical parts made by GKN. The only difference was the colour of the boxes they came in.

Quoted cost of timing-belt kit (VAT inc.)

 

‘Genuine’ Fiat - £214.32

 

‘Pattern’ - £95.06

 

The cheaper quote does indicate that the timing-belt kit, water pump, belts and coolant liquid would not be Fiat items. The only two items common to both quotes would be two sealing gaskets (£19.88 VAT inc.)

 

When I discussed this task with the Fiat Professional service manager, he confirmed what Nick Fisher has said here previously - that changing the water-pump as well as the timing-belt adds significantly to the time taken to complete the work. The potential advantage of opting for the more expensive approach using ‘genuine’ Fiat parts and the recommended (Paraflu) coolant might be if a problem occurred subsequently, but he said they had carried out this task previously using all ‘pattern’ parts and he did not recall any problems having resulted.

 

I guess what this ought to prove is that, if a quote is obtained for a Ducato timing-belt change, it is important to confirm the scope of the work and which parts will be used.
