Cambelt costs again.

I have just been quoted £1560 for Cam + Aux belts change on my Hymer B584 2.8 idTD Ducato, this from the Iveco/Fiat dealer near me. I know that it is a more difficult job on an A class than a coach built, but this seems a bit excessive . Last time they did the job it was £340. The bits now cost about £150 so the labour charges seem a bit high to me. Anyone else quoted this sort of figure?. Anyone recommend a more competitive priced garage near me?. I live east of B/ham, at Coleshill. Thank you.

That seems excessive. A justification would be interesting.

Just had my cam belt changed on my A Class which has the 2.8Jtd engine – under £300 inclusive of labour, parts and VAT. This was done at a motorhome specialist so they were happy to give a firm quotation via email right from the beginning based on the vehicle type. The book time for this job is 1.7 hours. The auxiliary belts did not need changing.

Your engine may be different however I’d not expect it to be that much different in cost.

It’s worth note that when I put the job out to tender I received written quotes ranging from under £300 to £720!

A Cambelt is shorter in life than a chain. If Broken Your engine will be broken. But they last in time depending on your engine architecture . And maintenance. Of the tensioners. All engine bays look different in reach, but a good engineer like my partner has no problem whit that. A timing belt in the head of your engine is your mechanical engine computer along whit the electric sensors. Check the last before changing a belt or chain It is just a watch on your left hand, or do you wear your rolex on the right?

Seems that garages are cashing in on easy money by maxing out on charges - especially for motorhomes.

Six years ago I paid a short £500 for MOT, full service & cam belt.

A few years ago it changed ownership and I have noticed creeping charges for the car and van.

Recently I had the same MOT, full service & filters etc & cam belt/ water pump kit - the bill was just over £900 which also included a water temperature sensor and sorting out the temperature gauge.

I was braced for a £700 hit and queried the bill.

Cam belt change - parts £ 225 + vat?? , which I pointed out was usually £130-170 eBay and they say we only use genuine parts sir, especially on your motor home, which is more difficult to get at. Separate Labour for cam belt was 5 hours, which is they claim is standard???

Service labour was a separate 2hours plus parts - obviously all maxed out and MOT at £54.

So now I have to find another garage in the Bath area before next year.

You can only vote with your feet if protesting and questioning the bill doesn't work.

Seems that you also need to ask around for a quote instead of just going back to your regular garage and trusting them.

Update.

Just to let you know how I got on with my cambelt change. Thank you to all who replied. especially Bounty Hunter for suggesting Dave Newall at Telford. tel. 01952 587702. Dave did the job, -- Cambelt kit + two aux. belts, very efficiently and no fuss, for £326.63. Other quotes were Travel World (Erwin Hymer ) at Stafford. tel 01785 878787. £568.50. -- D & R Services at Arley tel 01676 541569. £ 708.

They all needed 4/5 weeks advance booking.

Brian B.

ps. Before you ask, there is no water pump involvement with my 2.8 idTd engine, so possibly cheaper job than later engines.
