I too have fitted a 12v plug in a similar place to Robinhood as the USB and cigarette lighter socket in my cab are only live with the ignition on. I saw little point in restricting my outlet to just USB devices so chose to fit a normal cigarette lighter socket. I then bought a high quality USB adaptor plug for it. https://goo.gl/VdDJVn My plug is identical to Robinhoods' in appearance and size. This gives me the best of both worlds. I can charge two USB devices, and quickly, or I can remove the USB adaptor and plug in my laptop, which has a 12v lead for when we're off site. I can also plug in my 12v mini-vacuum cleaner or any other item that I would normally plug into a cigarette lighter socket. It seems a shame to go to all the trouble of fitting an extra plug and restricting it to USB devices. I'm not technical but I suspect that my adaptor will not have a residual drain as it's a 12v plug wired into a 12v circuit. The reason that USB plugs have a drain is because they are a mini transformer reducing the voltage from 12v to 5v. There will only be a drain on mine if I leave the USB adaptor plug in place when it's not being used. I think! This eliminates the need for wiring in a switch to isolate the plug. BKen1 Posted June 18, 2017 Author Share Posted June 18, 2017 The USB adaptor you are using is a normal fitting ,,all my cig type sockets (3 off) in the habitation area are the DIN type hench thats what I was looking for with USB outputs . The cab area has the normal fitting and as you say the ignition need to be on for power so only use that when driving.
