PB17
Hi everyone, Sarah and I have decided to take the plunge and buy our very first motorhome! We have seen a Pilote Galaxy 270 2003 facelift model we are extremely keen on. Before we part with our hard earned cash, does anyone have any particular views on this particular model or things we should look out for? Thanks in advance Paul
weldted
Check the mot history, models around that year suffered corrosion of the front crossmember and inner wheel arches, as usual check for damp.
Derek Uzzell
Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums, Paul. This 2008 MHFacts thread discussed buying a 2001 Pilote Galaxy 270 and may be of interest. https://forums.motorhomefacts.com/21-newcomers/39219-buying-pilote-galaxy-270-al-ko-chassis-general-advise-pls.html There’s an old advert for a 2004-registered Galaxy 270 here https://www.southdownsmotorhomecentre.co.uk/used-pilote-galaxy-270motorhome-u2778.html That vehicle’s registration number (BX54BWY) can be input to the gov.uk MOT history chececker https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history and this could give an idea of possible faults to look out for. Obviously (as wedlted advises) you should do the same with the actual Galaxy 270 you are considering buying. The Galaxy 270 was quite compact (just over 6-metres in length) had an AL-KO chassis and in LHD format was Fiat based. The UK RHD version was based on a Peugeot Boxer with 2.8litre HDI motor and commonly had a maximum overall weight of 3850kg. Some UK Galaxy 270s may have been ‘down plated’ to 3500kg for driving-licence reasons, so it would be worth you confirming the maximum overall weight of ‘your’ vehicle. (3500kg would probably be OK, but 3850kg would be better.) Make sure the expensive kit (heater and fridge) works properly and - as this will be your 1st motorhome - it would probably be best to buy through a dealership with a good reputation who will provide a realistic warranty. PB17
Thank you so much for your advice, that is incredibly useful. Interestingly, it is built on a RHD Fiat Ducato, so will need to check. Deposit paid today, hab check booked and we are very excited! I am buying from a dealer with good reviews online and have opted to pay extra for an extended warranty, just in case... On the point of weight, I will need to check this out but I am pre-1997, so if anything a higher weight might help ( I think!). Best wishes Paul
Derek Uzzell
PB17 - 2020-06-03 11:11 PM ...Interestingly, it is built on a RHD Fiat Ducato... I see from on-line adverts that RHD Galaxy 270 models were indeed bulit on a Fiat Ducato as well as a Peugeot Boxer base, though - other than a few badges - there should be no significant technical differences. I’m pretty sure that the RHD norm was to build on the Boxer, but perhaps Pilote built on whatever chassis they had to hand at their French factory. As far as I’m aware, all LHD Galaxy 270 models were on a Fiat base. Regarding the vehicle side, things worth checking would be the specification and age of the tyres fitted to it, when the motor’s timing-belt (cambelt) was last replaced and when the brake-fluid was last changed. I notice there is an on-line advert for a 2003 Ducato-based G270 - though I’ve no idea if that’s relevant to your purchase http://www.dvleisure.com/?id=791907
PB17
Thanks again for the info. That isn’t our one but it is virtually identical. Cam belt was changed in October. I’m unsure about the brake fluid but will check. We are picking it up on a Friday - very, very excited! Paul

Derek Uzzell
Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums. Paul Brooks (User-name PB17) has only posted 3 times to these forums - all 3 postings in the the above discussion - and 7 July 2020 was the lat time Paul logged on. Sometimes people maintain a watching brief on these forums without logging on, but don’t be too disappointed if there is no response from Paul. Given how long you’ve owned your Galaxy 270, I’m sure Paul would have benefitted from your hands-on experience of the model.
