General Strike France

PJay

Recommended Posts

Just been told by friend living in France, that there could be a general strike from 14th June. They are restricted to 30 euros worth of Fuel in their area (87) Haute Vienne

we are still deciding whether to go over for a couple of weeks end of next week.

Typical French attitude!

Do we really want to be in partnership with this country?? We have made our vote!!

Pity they did not "stand more together" between '39-'45 or is that beastly and "up yours Jack"?

In WW1 the French had about 1.38m military deaths out of a population of about 42m. We lost about 0.74m for a population of 36m. So about 3.2% compared with 2%, as you can see from the memorials across France. The experience of such a high death toll scarred the French and then with such a long land border to the East they were vulnerable to attack. We were lucky we had the Channel or we would have been over-run too.

hi all,

France are second major EU country as I see it. I wonder what Cameron and co would think if our workers showed unity and took action to get the same workers protection as French workers, or is that a part of being in the EU the 'haves' don't think we should share in.?

cheers

The workers who want to retain their protective rights in employment are determined to do so even though their socialist government want to make the changes in order to improve unemployment, which is currently 10% of the whole workforce, rising to 25% among young people.  If highly regulated workers rights such as they have in France are discouraging to employers and therefore harmful to employment rates. as the socialist French Government seems to believe, isn't it rather selfish of the CTG workers to want to impose their interests over those of French workers (and potential workers) as a whole?

Hi,

Where we had a place in France, the locals did not seem to realise that we had been in the war ... all their gratitude is directed towards the Americans.

Whatever, a general strike might act as a rehearsal for BREXIT.

I assume a general strike means no cross channel services, so we can't go. Will borders with other states be similarly closed?

Limp wristed? Isn't there some cliché about the anger of a patient man?

hi Stuart, It still does not say much for the EU if that is the unemployment rate.cheersderek

Reading all this stuff about worker solidarity and the way the French feel that they should always rebel against their government cause me to think, firstly of my late father, a staunch socialist and trades unionist, who would wisely point out that if you put your foot down you make yourself vulnerable to getting your toes trodden on.

Secondly I picture the crew of a sinking ship, standing together on deck, holding hands and and comforting one another, instead of manning the bl**dy pumps.

In my sailing days we always affirmed the whilst Brittania Ruled the Waves, France waived the rules.

I don't think you'll find that any borders will be closed - only the French government can do that.

If you turn up in your own boat on June 14 th I've no doubt you will be allowed in.

We,ve been in France in the past when strikes on. The Bridge from Le Havre was free, (No staff)

We sailed into Cherbourg when they on strike NO-one bothered us,did not look for passports, just let us stay in marina, which is why the illegals can get onto various transport

Also got stuck in Cherbroug when the fishermen on strike, and blockaded the port, . The Police just stood around and watched , the burning of tyres and blocking the bridge open with boats

At least in a van, you have your facilities , I felt sorry for the holiday makers in cars, they just have to sit it out.

RE: Standing together.

My reference was to 'Vichy France' I don't think the UK was divided into two parts whilst we were fighting Hitler.

My Grandfather lost an arm in France in WW1, my father lost two years of his life fighting in France and Germany and to then have some a**ehole rubbish this country because he/she like to holiday in France! if ever there was a reason for withdrawing a passport...............

Rant over.
