Matrix Meanderer
Can any Forum member recommend a wine shop selling more than French wine near Dieppe? We are booked on the Newhaven Dieppe ferry for our next MH trip and had a day trip to Calais also booked (in the car) courtesy of the excellent Calais Wine Superstore free day return promotion. But with the current nonsense at Dover/Calais it makes no sense to attempt a day trip to Calais. So with a rapidly depleting wine cupboard we need to find a wine shop near Dieppe similar to the Calais Wine Warehouse that sells new world/Spanish/Italian wines and not just French wines. We will be driving back from the Ile de Re so anywhere roughly on that route would be OK. Any recommendations?
lennyhb
We use Dieppe regularly there are some posh wine shops in the town but you won't be able to park near them. We alway use the Auchan Hypermarket they carry a very good selection.
Brian Kirby
The Calais warehouses are generally directed at the British, who generally drink a wider range of wines than the French. Elsewhere in France you are likely to find only French wines on offer, frequently with a bias toward local wines. These are the wines the French know and like, so the supermarkets sell them in preference to "foreign" wines that the French don't know, so don't buy. Since Calais has by far the greatest through-flow of British visitors of all the French ports (even more so if the tunnel is also counted in), there will be little incentive for supermarkets or other retailers elsewhere to stock wines that are unlikely to shift except to the odd, wandering, Brit. I know it's all a matter of personal preference, but why waste the opportunity to experiment while away, and get to know some of the French wines? There are a lot to choose from. Enjoy your trip and watch your liver! :-D
Matrix Meanderer
Thanks Brian. After holidaying in France for over 30 years I am aware of the "shortcomings" of most French supermarkets when it comes to stocking anything made outside France ;-) What I am trying to find out is if there are any wine retailers near Dieppe similar to Calais. Apparently not so far. We did see a few couple of similar wine stores in Roscoff recently but it seems like Dieppe only has the regular supermarkets. StuartO
The Wine Society, a British non-profit retailer of a wide range of wines, has a French Showroom at Montrieul sur Mer, about 45 miles South of Calais. It is to be closed in December 2016 but for now it's a good place to buy good wine at prices which are lower than in UK. Ideally you order in advance and your wine will be ready for collection. The town also has a Motorhome Aire so you can spend your last night there and collect your wine. The store is behind the Hôtel Hermitage off Place Gambetta in the town centre, and is accessible on foot through the hotel or via the electronic gate of the hotel's secure car park. We came across this showroom by accident a couple of years ago when staying on the campsite and wandering round the hotel car park looking at a vintage car rally. Excellent wines and sorry to read that they are leaving. Definitely worth a look.
