Insurance for over 70s

Folks

I put a posting up last week looking for case studies relating to insurance for the over 80s. Whilst it had a lot of views there were no takers. Maybe the age limit was a bit high so I'm re-posting but with a lower age limit so here goes:

Have you had problems getting insurance because of your age? I’m putting together an article for What Motorhome on the problems of getting insurance if you’re an older driver. I’m looking for any anecdotes from motorhome owners who have struggled with their cover because of their age - but it would be great to hear from people who have found solutions too. Please reply on this site or via email (mail@richarddredge.com).

Many thanks,

Mine has been easy so far too - but I have merely stuck with the same insurer since I reached 70 yrs old.

One potential obstacle was that my insurer (LV) showed signs of doubling the premium after a claim, despite Protected No Claims Bonus, after I notified them of a potential claim - which in the event did not materialise.    In the meantime my renawal arose and the premium was to be doubled compared to the previous year - because "the file was still open" on the potential claim and would remain open for 3 months.

I concluded that they were being opportunistic and exploitive (the accident was merely a clashing of door mirrors with no damage to mine, so very probably no claim) so I emailed the Chief Executive of LV to complain, pointing out that I had five policies with LV and if they insisted on hiking my motorhome policy premium, when I had already got a much cheaper quote from another insurer)  they would probably five policies, not just one.  The "file had been closed" within a couple of days.

It was quite a big disappointment to see LV, hitherto a seemingly paternalistic mutual insurer, starting to behave like this so I hope it's not something they will get into a habit of doing.  I have heard that switching insurers gets more difficult as you get older so perhaps they start to treat you as a captive market.

Hi Richard,

I have recently sold my own on line Insurance Company after trading for 30 years, over this period I saw the company grow into Europe's largest specialist golf insurer. I share this with you and your potential readers/followers and leave you to judge if you consider me qualified to comment on the topic raised.

I have just purchased my first motorhome, a 2015 Hymer Exsis i588 which I take delivery of at the end of April, I therefore needed to obtain cover for the vehicle, and spent most of Easter on line checking out policies with what I considered to be the top six companies.

As you can imagine, I am very well aware of the importance of reading the small print on insurance polices, and with that in mind I will use a quote that stood me in good stead over many years of marketing insurance products. 'Your Insurer is only as good as your next claim'.

My recent on line research put two companies way ahead of the rest, namely NFU Mutual and Saga. Both of them had very user friendly websites, age was certainly not a problem and on this occasion I chose Saga.

With an annual premium of £224.00 against a potential full claim risk of £50,000, for me was a no brainer, the policy covers up to 4 named drivers and all the European cover I will ever need, plus the important low excess in the event of a broken windscreen.

Richard- I am assuming you are referring to the likes of Car or Motorhome insurance rather than Travel Insurance?

I'm 76, and so far with one exception have never had a problem with car or motorhome renewals. Like a previous contributo.r, I do tend to stick with the same provider - certainly for the motorhome, though I do shop around to see if I can get better rates, then come back to my 'usual' to see if I can negotiate a little there.. I did have one occasion when I was felt quite insulter when I tried a 'new' provider who had recently advertised in MMM and they were almost rude when I answered the question about my age and was told 'too old'!

As at as the car policy is concerned, I always shop round, and frequently move to a cheaper/better provider, and have never had any problems re age.

Travel insurance is a different matter - .and from the age of 60 that has become increasingly difficult, though mainly as I want more than the standard 31 days.and not many provides seem to want to cover this.
