We are toying with the idea of spending 3 months in Australia next year and would like to hire a motorhome / camp van as think it would workout cheaper than taking ours over. Has anyone on the forum done this and if so, any suggestions what to take etc. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately only allowed to enter Australia for 3 months! Thought about transporting motorhome over but think it will be more expensive than hiring. What we have seen at present it works out cheaper for longer you hire and are looking at around £5000 to hire for 3 months and then Australia is your oyster .

We have been going to Oz for 20 years in winter and have our own basic van stored there, just a couple of points to think about.

1. Its as big as all Europe so in 3 months you will only see half at maximum, you can get a 6 month visa thats what we do and have been right around Oz twice.

2. There are at least 6 nationwide camper companies there. It is very important to start at the right place dependent on the time of the year you enter Oz.

3. Although my web site is for windsurf travelers it may be of use see the Oz section

Hi Margo, Steve Hill's advice on matching your starting point to the time of year is good advice. We are planning to leave W3 April and do a "lap". From our base in Sydney we will head south to Melbourne then across to Perth as the temps on the Nullabor Plains should have cooled down. Then north from Perth basically up the coast and across to Darwin where the temp in winter (June/July) is a comfortable 25-30C. Then head south east to Mt Isa then down to Sydney maybe via the Queensland/NSW coast. That journey is approx 14,000 kms. Re timing the northern half of the country is not too pleasant in summer. Very hot and in the coastal areas it is wet season. Often flooded roads from heavy rains etc.. You may choose to not do a "lap" it all depends on what you want to see. This is our 7th year spending 4 to 5 months in each year radiating out from Sydney. This is the first year we have decided to go right around. So do not feel you need to see it all in one go.

If you need any help send me a PM when you work out what you want to see.

On the topic of import vs rent of a motorhome I costed importing a MH from UK a couple of years ag and the freight was A$5000 plus cleaning, customs clearing charges etc. There are several good rental companies along with companies that will sell you a vehicle with a guaranteed buyback price, plenty of options. Generally the longer the hire term the cheaper per day the rate becomes.

Remember half the fun is in planning your adventure. Oh & by the way we all speak English here or at least a version of it!!!

cheers,

About ten years ago we did an around the world trip and hired a camper van when ever possible. In Australia we went to a tourist office and picked up leaflets for camper van hire. Prices varied a lot. The main thing we found was to make sure you see the van before you hire it and make sure everything is working. We found that they try and give you a ropey old van ! The longer the hire the cheaper it was. Also make sure you get really good insurance included in the price. We found it very hot and wish we had air conditioning .
