Motorhome Insurance - Comfort Insurance

Hi

Sorry to raise this old chestnut but has anybody got any experience of Comfort Insurance?

Had my renewal quote from Saga and checked a lot of websites to find Comfort are just over half the cost of all the rest. As I believe in the statement 'If it's too good to be true it probably is' I've checked and can't find the catch.

Can anybody point out the catch please.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

I've been with Comfort for the last 12 years and always had excellent service.

I also have the combined home/travel cover that allows you to be away from and leave your property unoccupied for trips up to 180 days at a time.

They are also one of the few that will give you cover for the whole of Turkey not just the European side.

We have been with Comfort since 2006. We have had claims and they were dealt with promply.

We were on normal cover until February 2010 when we went full time in our motorhome. Comfort are brokers for AVIVA and have arranged a special Motorhome policy with them. They are the only company that offers true full timing insurance with no uk residence, but it is not cheap.

i also am happy with comfort, although i havent made a claim.

however, it is always worth revisiting quotes. for our car, saga quoted £253. our 3 cheapest quotes were in the region of £163. we then asked saga about price match, told then our cheapest quote and got a new offer of £153. they had offered price match when i did my m/home insurance, but sadly did not take then up on it. next time!!!!

Just switched this last week to comfort from caravan guard and saved about £70 off their renewal quote.

I went back to CG to see if they would match or beat comforts quote and whilst they did reduce their original price would not come within £30 of comforts premium.

The only possible catch with comfort is they will not protect any no claims discount younmay have, so one assumes that if you make a claim the next years premium will significantly increase!

Anyone had any experience of renewing with comfort after making a claim?

The way they explain that is if you claim, and you have protected claims with someone else, next year you keep your no claims, BUT your premium goes up anyway so your protected no claims is not worth a jot

We switched to Comfort last year after many years with Safeguard. Their premiums were rising quite steeply and they insisted on extra 'security' in the form of tracker/cat 1 alarms for vehicles worht more than £45K.

Like Don Madge we also took out the house/contents insurance and the travel insurance that went it as it was getting more difficult and expensive to get adequate (medical) cover with pre-existing conditions and more bits falling off/seizing up!

Wanted to put the car insurance with them too but they couldn'y match the Saga quote so it stays where it is for now.

One more thing. I was a bit wary when I heard the policy was with AVIVA as the original Norwich Union had a poor service reputation after they moved the call centre to India. When I soke to the boss at Comfort he assured me theyuse only UK call centre.

Not had to claim (from them or safeguard for that matter) except last week for a chipped windscreen repair - and that was all taken care of by Autoglass with no cost to me and no loss of claims. But not heard of any adverse comments either.

I changed to Comfort last year not had a claim and although they are underwritten by AVIVA I've never heard a bad word about them.

I was impressed by the helpfulness & knowledge of the person I spoke to.

Renewal due in 3 weeks should know soon if I am in for a shock or not.

Bit late with reply but .....

Our camper was insured, in husbands name with me as named driver, with Comfort for some years.

Last September our door mirror got dinged in Cologne area and the other driver, works van, decided it was our fault and flagged down a passing police car so had to be passed to insurer. Hubby was driving.

Good result, it was a no blame to us and got the excess payment back. Unfortunately hubby popped his clogs between claim and resolution. He would have been delighted as he assumed that a foreigner was not necessarily going to win.

I re-registered van in my name and Comfort changed insurance to me with no additional charge. Having now sold the van I can't say what would have happened on renewal.

The car, however, is a totally different story. Not insured via Comfort as they couldn't do the price. Car is insured to me with him as named driver. On removing him they were going to charge an additional £26.48 but did waive it, just as well. The renewal is some £80 so I did the comparisons etc. Couldn't find a better deal but did challenge and have got it down to £52 extra. I should add that I have full no claims and apart from moving from married to widow nothing else has changed.

Now looking to change car and finding that part-ex prices are through the floor and purchase prices are through the roof and insurance would be higher although I'm looking to downsize.

They've got you all ways up!

I'm encouraged by all the positive comments about Comfort. I've been with them 4 years but fortunately never claimed so I have no experience of how they are in a crisis - I note "The Don's" comments cover a much longer period .

It was interesting that they re-based their M/H policies last year to equivalent of "classic car" insurance which, given the limited usage and highly cherished nature of many M/Hs seems an obviously sensible approach. It also lowered my premium (but did away with the NCD system they had previously).

The only concern I have is the low-sounding limits on foreign breakdown cover, but given that it is included in the low-ish insurance premium, I expect a degree of self-insurance on breakdown costs is implied. The van is meticulously and professionally maintained so hopefully, a breakdown overseas is unlikely.

I have not received the renewal notice from them yet so have no idea what the premium will be - it's due 12 June so I expect they will send the documents shortly.

Thanks again to all who have replied.

Read all the comments, no bad ones, so I've rung them today and bought their insurance.

Very impressed that for the first time ever when I've got a quote over the internet it didn't go up when I spoke to the company!

had several problems with them - and so took my business elsewhere,

protected ncb is a farce with them

did not like their attitude either when I queried the swingeing premium hike.

Renewal arrived, Comfort gone up 3.85% which I guess is OK (no claim made). Noted changes to small print: credit card charge introduced at £2.50 up to £500 and £5 for premiums over £500, standard personal injury insured's and spouse's amount halved to £2,500, charge for future policy amendment gone up 50% to £15 and option of extending RAC cover to personal cover in any vehicle withdrawn from scheme. A revised insurance policy booklet is apparently now on line so time to download, put bag of ice on my head and read.....

Last year I insured my new Motorhome with Caravan Guard at a cost of £385 which at that time was the cheapest quote available for the size and cost of the vehicle (8.7m, 3Ltr, Tag Axle £70K). Had to put in a claim for a minor accident in September last year but did have protevcted no claims. Just had my renewal notice from Caravan Guard and they wanted £433, which, on the face of it did not seem bad. However, I did some ringing around today to get some quote comparisons and although Safeguard could match it, Comfort Insurance came back initially with a quote of £328 including UK'Europe Breakdown (through RAC), after a bit of conversation I discovered that although the factory fitted solar panel and the additional Air Con Unit I had fitted as an extra were included, the Camos Sat Dome wasn't, when this was added the total cost came to £358. No need to guess who my new Insurers are :D

Having read all the coments on Comfort Insurance has made me think, I will give them a try next year.

(lol)

It is hard to fathom out this Insurance M'larky. last year upon getting my brand new vehicle and discovering that my current Insurers were far too expensive, I went on all of the major Motorhome Insurers websites and obtained quotes, even Comfort Insurance. The cheapest quote for what I wanted was Caravan Guard. This year when doing the research, and the vehicle being just one year older, I discover that Comfort Insurance can Insure me for less than I paid Caravan Guard last year ? It's a funny murky old world isn't it. No doubt next year when I do the same renewal research I will find another Insurer, ah well, as long as it is saving me some money then the time and effort tapping away on the keyboard will be well worth it ;-)

Slightly OT but house insurance renewal just came through it's with Marks & Sparks renewal was £352, for building & contents, went online filled out a quote request, came out at £234.

Phoned them I was told online quotes include a 15% discount for new polices - maths obviously not their strong point, anyway they advised me to take out a policy online then ring them back to cancel the renewal. I obviously didn't opt for the protected No Claims @ £20 as I will do the same next year.

One point worth mentioning with M&S as I found it the best way to get the bikes fully covered, standard policy cover includes individual items up to £4000 covered world wide. Saga will only cover bikes in the UK & want £100 to do it, specialist bike policies won't cover them on a vehicle or in a public place overnight (11pm-7am), not a lot of good if they get nicked off the back of the van at night.
