vindiboy Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 I doubt if you have a speedo cable, they hardly exist any more its more likely to be an electronic sensor.my friend had one fail recently on his Fiat van, his van passed the MOT ,although the speedo wasn't working, apparently its not an MOT item, strange that, although he did get it fixed at the same time, most of his Dash had to be removed to do it though. *-) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My Peugeot mechanic nephew diagnosed it correctly with the gearbox cable/sensor gadget, I think I paid about £20 but I really am guessing. Plus at the same time he oiled/watered this that and the other. The worst case scenario, (so another mechanic commented), is when the dash has to be pulled apart and fixed from that end so fingers crossed for you. It took him about 1 minute to put the part on the gearbox and 10 to refill the gearbox oil to the correct level. Martyn Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
davenewellhome Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 As Martyn says it is most likely the speed pulse generator on the rear of the gearbox. To test it with a voltmeter/ohmeter: There are three wires to the pulse generator, one will show battery voltage with the ignition on, one will be earth and the third (blue) wire will alternately give around 10 volts and 0 volts as you rotate the offside front wheel. If you don't read a voltage on any of the wires with the ignition switched on then its likely to be the fuse (consult your handbook), if battery voltage is there and one other wire measures minimal resistance to earth but there is no change on the blue wire as you rotate the offside front wheel then the pulse generator is US. Rainbow-Chasers Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 This is caused by water in the gearbox - common problem with these. I have an exact model on the hire fleet that has just had a new gearbox because of this fault. The speedo drive is chewed up as a consequence - which was the fault in the case of ours - the speedo worked internmittently. Upon checking up, it turns out to be a fault with the rain water collector from the scuttle panel which deposits all the water onto the top of the gearbox, from here it seeps into the box. Especially prone with motorhomes, as they are stood up for long periods - ideal conditions for ingress. The cure involves, firstly a new gearbox, and secondly pushing the rubber hose that collects the rainwater (deposits just above the gearbox mount topside) and push it backwards towards the rear of the box, so it throws it out of the back. Bob Elswood Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 Hello there, Yep I had a similar problem last July/August with my Boxer 2.00ltr HDI(1974) I made the mistake of taking it to my 'local' garage who misdiagnosed it as a loom problem. Any way I took it to a specialist auto electricians and they replaced the 'speed sensor' attached to the gear box and everything is now fine. They said it is not uncommon for these sensors to fail on occasions. I would suggest taking your van to a specialist auto electricians first, they may be more expensive but at least you should get a positive result and unlike me have to pay two bills to different garages. Sorry, I just realised that as yours is a 2002 it may be either the later model (with flip up map holder in centre of dash top) or the earlier incarnation (with flat topped dash, three stalks on the steering column and the radio mounted low down). If it is the later model then my previous post is correct, if its the earlier model then the speedo is cable driven and the fault could be a broken cable or the pinion drive gear boss slipping on the diff shaft. George Collings Posted January 4, 2009 Share Posted January 4, 2009 If the cause is the one Dave mentions with a flexible cable and the problem is with the plastic gears inside the transmission, the subject has been covered on p261 July 2006 and p254 October 2006 issues of MMM. The parts (cost was under a fiver + around 1.5 hrs labour) can be changed with the transmission in situ by removing the the driveshaft and bearing housing.
