I like to make the most of exploring each area as we see it - so will research thru the Rough Guide and also websites like this one and Virtual Tourist for ideas of places to go and see, not necessarily the touristy ones, but the ones not to be missed.

I've also been known to look at photos on Flickr website site as well, to see if a place is worth stopping at.

This works for us, some trips we just take off and go relatively local, but certainly the longer ones i like to adopt this routine so we don't find we've missed something worth visiting.

Very thorough research to minimise risk of a duff trip or bad experience. Use internet extensively including Google Earth, tourism websites and city/town/village/commune/sites of interest pages. Also do key word searches on this forum and generally to identify feedback on camp sites, aires etc. For each night halt there is a "Plan B" alternate should the first turn out to be a bad choice. For each geographic area walks are identified and planned and maps, tourism guides etc purchased in advance.

FOr our 'major trip of about 8wks each yr to france,we wouldplan only the ferries. No sites are evr booked ahead. No ned, and generallyyou pay when you leave!

In Uk, we mya have a rough idea of where we wish to go,but otehr than weekends, out of season CC sites are generally available. If we want to go to sities, especially during the winter season, then we would tend to book in advance on the internet, although this may be a very much last minute decision.

We plan.  First we agree the broad destination.  Then we identify the interest.  Then I set about identifying stopping places near the interest so, by the time we leave, we know where we're headed, what we want to see, where we may stay, and why we're going.

We take guide books and maps, and detail is added as we go along, varying our rough itinerary because of weather, or in response to bits of information picked up from others we meet, or from pamphlets we pick up, as we travel.

Somehow, not having a plan of any kind seems too much like wandering around in a fog.  You know what you've bumped into, but not necessarily where it is, and you've no idea what you've missed.  You'll never see it all, but some research, and a plan, don't half help!

When travelling in France we tend to have a rough plan ie know the general direction in which we're headed. We never book ahead, and tend to travel out of season so have never experienced any difficulty in finding somewhre to stay whether it be an aire or campsite. We are always prepared to change direction eg depending on weather. That's the beauty of a MH. In the UK we only ever have short breaks so would almost always have a destination in mind before we set out.
