Have to say, a folding toaster is probably the most pointless purchase I've ever made. Great if you like slightly warm bread, not much use otherwise. That's because you bought the wrong type of folding toaster. The 'flat' horizontal type of folding toasters are absolutely brilliant ! They work really well and we have two to speed up the process a bit and if you use smallish slices of bread and turn them regularly you can do two slices at a time on each one! The sellers opinions seem divided on which way up to use it? We prefer the first advert's way but I guess the way the handle folds will dictate? We also use two at a time when necessary - very quick, (so doesn't use too much gas). Ours is like the GoOutdoors one ( the HiGear ) - but theirs is pictured upside down, and it looks as if the toast would fall off when you pick it up ! The diffuser mesh should surely be underneath. At the risk of giving my age away - the first camping 'toaster' we ever had was a flat 9" sqaure metal framed asbestos sheet on the burner side with a mesh in contact with it for the bread side which a 'friend' gave us. We didn't have it for long before we tried one of those useless pyramid thingies! But then we soon got all civilised and started motorcaravanning with - joy of joys - a proper grill - even if we did have to stand the grill pan on a thick ceramic tile to get it to grill properly !! Memories eh !! Asbestos flavoured toast - yummy - wouldn't 'Elfan' have a field day with that now !! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Unfortunately we couldn't use the grill on our stove because it came without a heatproof plate and we've only just got round to getting one. The real answer for us is most of them! The only things that spring to mind with a long term useful life seem to be the gas BBQ (Beauclaire with griddle) and surprisingly the toasters - we use one or two of the flat ones not having grill or oven but still liking the occasional piece of toast. The trick with all camping toasters is to keep the bread moving. Almost everything else of value is pretty much installed equipment or household products. In that line our refillable gas bottles and the french toughened thin glass crockery stand out as being a constant pleasure. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
