You should have read the article, Dave. :-) It does not expose an anti-government bias by the BBC, it exposes that the BBC has journalists who have made critical comments about the government on Twitter etc in contravention of its charter.

So what should journalists do? Follow the army diktat of 'if it moves salute it, and if it doesn't, paint it white'? :-D Some use those journalists would be, wouldn't they? It's their fundamental job to speak truth to power.

Increasingly the news coverage consists of presenter/journalists interviewing other presenter/journalists who are expressing opinions rather than facts. And they also report things which they claim to have been told privately without telling us who., so they might be inventing things just to fabricate a good story.

And if the presenter/journalists are all recruited from the same pool of like-minded, i.e. partisan people, the output is likely to continue to be a partisan version of the truth, i.e.merely propaganda.

And if their idea of an independent review is to appoint yet another person from the same partisan pool as the reviewer, it's not going to be a remotely independent review either.

No, but there are other journalists/reporters with differing views and alternative informants - so it is not as though everything is seen in the same distorting mirror. As ever, we all have to use our judgement about what is written or said, and by whom, to be aware of where the possible biases might lie. That is just life, I think: like it or lump it.

I certainly think it is time that the " News " channels reviewed their activities.

At the moment we get speculation and opinion, plus a bit of news if you can spot it. All broadcasters want to be the first with any news so that try to anticipate what it will be.

Things really went downhill with the media Brexit circus on the green opposite the Houses of parliament.

For days- or weeks - every passing M.P. or journalist was hi-jacked into giving an opinion or forecast on what was happening or about to happen. We then got a discussion, and a summary, of what they all didn't know, from newspaper and TV journalists.

I would like to see a clear distinction between news - speculation- and opinion, in separate programmes, so we can choose which we would like to see and hear.

The most common bias on this forum seems to be against free speech, and criticism of authourity.

How can they tell us who when Dominic Cummings has them fired and escorted out of the building by armed police for having a conscience and helping us find out what he's up to. Like disbanding the pandemic control department to concentrate on Brexit >:-)

I suppose the critics of authority are those exercising free speech, and those against free speech are in favour of authority - though I think "the present government" might more accurately be substituted for "authority". For people to respect authority, those in authority have first to earn it. My impression is that the usual probationary respect for a new government was lost to their management of Covid - and has yet to be regained. The resurrection of Spitting Image might be instructive! :-D

I rather suspect that one of the culprits for the disemination of opinion and sometimes misinformation is the speed with which so called "news" now hits the airwaves.

Invariably it is instant so there is no time for the reporter to digest it and consider it. It hits the Internet as it is being typed or spoken. I am a great believer in "sleeping on it" The implications of the report or solution to a problem often is much clearer after a night's sleep.

I was taught that when public speaking you should spend a minimum of 1 hr in preparation for each minute of the speech. This ensured accuracy by time to research and verify, and a good structure with a beginning a middle and an end.

Not something that many reporters either can, nor seemingly want to do these days. There are a few, but they are rare (and mostly now near retirement age!)

Ah, if only the rest of the world was just like me? :-D

The flaw in your argument is that those you'd judge impartial would appear to many others highly partial, and vice versa.

You say you voted for Thatcher, which places you politically on the right wing of a right wing party.

So, by what yardstick could you judge impartiality, and why would anyone else accept the judgement of someone with a right wing bias, who repeatedly refers to anyone to the left of you (which includes almost the whole of the political centre as well as the political left), as "loony lefties"?

You couldn't recognise "impartial" if it hit you in the face! :-D

The link says nothing about university education: all it shows is that general support for the Conservatives is falling, and that for Labour rising, which, if the trends continue, points to a crossover late June/early July. Oh dear! Wrong link? :-D

Re university educated MPs, here you go: https://tinyurl.com/yd7jkjc6

Over 80% of MP's had a university education, and the highest number of university educated MPs is in the Conservative party (70% having Oxbridge degrees). Strange that a majority of Conservative MP emerged from all that left wing "brainwashing" at the hands of their "loony leftie" lecturers as right wingers. Maybe the world isn't quite as you see it after all! :-D

See what I mean about impartiality and not being able to recognise it? Ooops! :-D

You implicitly claim impartiality when you criticise anyone, whether a corporation or an individual, for not being impartial. To judge impartiality, you have to be impartial. So, as someone with an acknowledged political bias, you are unable to judge impartiality. Where you see bias, others will see balance, and others again, opposite bias. You won't find more right wing than Andrew Neil who chaired the Tory students society at university, worked for the Tory party, and has presented political programmes at the BBC for years. Surely you remember, your flame Johnson was the only party leader in history to run shy of an interview with Andrew Neil?
