Mel B
Anyone worked out whether we're better or worse off then? I'm totally confused!!!!! But then again, I ain't really checked it all out yet, just caught a bit of GG on the TV earlier and the reporters couldn't work it out! :-S
Guest starspirit
Oh Yes Mel I am about £100 a year worse off. But that is the reward I expected from a grasping socialist government for being self sufficient in income and not costing the state a penny whilst still contributing income tax and all the other taxes. Even pensioners over 65 will need to have an income of over £18,000 to reach the 'breakeven' point where tax saved equals tax paid. But of course every pensioner is so well off uner Labour that they all get far more than that don't they so asking pensioners to subsidise higher earners is very fair don't you think? Robin Hood my a##e - more like Robin Bas#ard!

Tony Jones
Heard lots of fuss about the "smoke and mirrors" of the 10p/20p/22p tax rates, but no-one I've heard has reminded us how much ("next so-much after allowances") the 10p rate applied to. With that tiny piece of info, we could work out the break-even point of those two changes, and each know exactly what difference it'll make to us. Can anyone remember it? Why are the media so obsessed with giving us their own chosen examples and analysis that they forget to give us the basic info to work it out for ourselves? donna miller
Any body earning less than about £23-24k will be worse off, because all income after allowance (in the lower tax bracket) will be 20% The threshold for higher tax has gone up from £40 to £43k and once in that tax bracket, your National insurance comes down from 11% to 1%. Tony Because following a modern state education many people are too stupid and / or lazy to work it out for themselves Tony. The 10p band is £2150. Guest starspirit
We all thought we were lucky to get away with just a £5 rise in VED didn't we? So how's about this for a classic Brownesque piece of stealth con then? Who noticed the words 'road tax for petrol cars would be aligned with diesel' in Grasping's budget speech? I for one didn't - until now that is! 'Alignment' means charging the same rate in each CO2 band for both diesel and petrol engined cars. Prior to this it was £10 a year less for petrol than diesel in most bands. So petrol engined car owners get to pay £15 a year more not the £5 spouted by Gordon? Apparently it affects about 40% of all cars on the road today? Wow! Classic - eh?
