Barryd999
The special relationship exists only in the minds of Trump and Johnson supporters and when America needs something from us.
Violet1956
Part of me thinks that Trump (or more likely his more learned and capable adjutants) is right take on the Iranian regime. It will come at a price but it is about time that this malodorous and misogynistic regime was defeated

Barryd999
Exactly. Iran isnt a battered weak country like Iraq was in 2003. Its military is pretty powerful and it has a lot of Allies many of which are nearby. Chinese business is massive in Iran as well. Apparently 35% of the western worlds oil comes through the straights of Hormuz (not the Americans though it seems). All Iran would have to do is block that and a lot of economies including ours probably would be tits up in weeks. The Americans never win these wars, they just make the situation worse. Its not Hollywood but they dont seem capable of understanding that.

Not the first time Britain has sided with someone worse to defeat an enemy. Like they supported Stalin to defeat Hitler And Pinochet to defeat Galtieri. Then halfway to Baghdad turns his forces back and leaves his supporters to their fate Then when his supporters have been killed he sends the army back for another go And when Saddam is finally defeated, leaves a power vacuum for someone worse to take over :-S PS: .. and the families of all the innocents we have killed turn terrorist against us. :-S

Violet1956
I suspect that the US holds most, if not all, the trump cards in this stand-off. If I were to choose between the lesser of two evils, the USA would get my vote every time.

John52
Violet1956 - 2020-01-04 7:14 PM I suspect that the US holds most, if not all, the trump cards. I guess in the old days the side with the biggest army would massacre their enemy and crush them But it doesn't work like that now. Because every bomb kills innocents, turning their families into terrorists, just one of whom can turn into a suicide bomber and kill 100 of the other side. Ultimately, however much more powerful you are than your enemy, you have to talk to them - which Jeremy Corbyn was trying to do and got called a 'Terrorist Lover' for his trouble :-S

Five years ago Trump never even knew who Soleimani was but he's been itching for a squabble with Iran ever since pulling out of the nuclear deal, wrecking what other countries had seen as hope for world peace. His attitude on a news report just now, head cocked side to side after swaggering to the lectern announces, "we gad 'im".....all he needed was a stetson, cowboy boots and spurs to complete the image. *-) Straits of Hormuz is a likely target to blockade. US have plenty of their own oil and only import around 11%. He's lit a powder keg but doesn't care as he hides behind his phone and Twitter, endangering lives of US citizens in Iraq who have had to flee. It's not a matter of whether Iran will hit back, more a case of where and when. Violet1956
The Iranian regime is sick at its heart. Bit of a ramble really, from a bloke who doesn’t want a war. Iran may be big but most is desert. There is little they can actually do to main land USA. They probably won’t do much in the straits as that would draw in other countries against them. So will probably stick to proxy assaults so as not to draw fire on to their country, which could be ablitterated stealthy without too much problem . They are financially strangled at present and are unlikely to be able to afford a drawn out conflict which the Americans can sit back and deliver. Its been proved time and time again you cannot win a war in any of these countries. The only way you could would be to invade and permanently occupy and I dont think thats remotely possible and would cost probably millions of lives. America might have a lot of military might but as has been proven time and time again its pretty useless in these situations long term at least and it just makes the situation worse as we have seen time and time again.
