Brexit Opportunities Minister.....

.....finds an "opportunity".

Smug has scrapped the introduction of planned post-Brexit inspections on food coming into the UK from the EU. In a written statement to the Commons, the Brexit opportunities minister said the controls set to come into force on 1 July would not be enforced during 2022.

“No further import controls on EU goods will be introduced this year".

Rees-Mogg pointed to living cost pressures as a major reason for the move, but blamed rising costs on “Russia’s war in Ukraine and in energy prices”. (54% energy increase was nothing to do with Russia or Ukraine you fkwit.....that was YOUR doing going back on a "promise" you and your lot made....but you were lying yet again);

However, he later told ITV that the controls on EU imports “would have been an act of self-harm”. Yep, that's Brexit.

And yet Reuters gives a more accurate account.

The checks have not been “scrapped”. They have been delayed to 2023 due to:-

“….Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the leap in global energy costs were hitting supply chains still recovering from the coronavirus pandemic.”

The Independent is a paper whose name could be challenged under the Trades Description Act. How typical that a tribe member believes it’s cr@p reporting.

So the three previous times its been "delayed" before Putin's most recent invasion, what does your "inependent" news source put those down to?

It states that on the link I posted.....Mr Rees-Mogg suggested the government planned a complete overhaul of its border check plans, revealing that the end of 2023 was the target for a brand new “controls regime”.

How many times is this now that they've been delayed?!! (lol)

The Russia-Ukraine invasion is mere deflection.....given chance they'll wheel out the MP perving at porn on his phone next!

Compared to Putin Invading Ukraine after previously invading Georgia and annexing Crimea - not to mention shooting down an civilian Malaysian airliner as well as chemical warfare in Syria and a Chemical attack on the U.K. (Salisbury) - I’m not sure a vote to leave the EU resulted in as many deaths?

.

I didn't say it did

Did I?

conflating the crisis in Ukraine and Brexit.

Both are catastrophes

And if Putin hadn't been successful in dividing us from our allies through his support for Brexit, he might not have been encouraged to think he could get away with invading Ukraine.

LOL! They laughed at me when I said about six years ago that Brexit could lead to World War 3. Not laughing now though eh? 8-)

OMG - you are deluded.

Putin is about divide and conquer hence the reason Russian funding was poured into Brexit which is all about breaking up the EU which he still sees as a threat. Britain also has a commitment to Ukraine as a signatory of the Budapest Memorandum. Yes Russia also signed it but Putin doesn't honour agreements.

Germany buy €billions of Putins energy but sends Ukraine 5000 helmets.

Continually trotting this out just makes your hatred of Germany patently obvious. They've sent €2 billion aid, anti aircraft systems, armoured vehicles, munitions and weapons.

To me it is “patently obvious” - you “hate” the U.K. for leaving the EU. You “hate” one political party and brown nose the other.

I certainly believe leaving the EU was foolhardy and undoubtedly the largest act of self harm the nation has inflicted on itself and nothing i've seen or read ever since 2016 has given me reason to convince me otherwise. Your rantings and hyperbole actually reaffirm that conviction too. The lies, deceit and misinformation Brexit was sold to the foolhardy and naive on has come home to roost.

Unlike you i'm neither ashamed or afraid to openly state my political party though i'd have thought that obvious.

The Tory party that was has long ceased since far right factions, Britain First, BNP, EDL, PA, UKIP et al infiltrated it to spread their fascist filth and hatred.

And now - a significant proportion of the EU citizens conclude the U.K. CAN “act faster” and be more “nimble” now it is no longer in the EU.

Please go to the M20 to tell that joke to the thousands of truck drivers losing incomes unable to get out of the country due to an inefficient IT system.

Meantime here is Smug reminding everyone implementing Brexit is an act of self harm......we told you this over five years ago.

Jacob Rees-Mogg has given the game away – even this government knows Brexit is a disaster

On a visit to the Eurotunnel terminal at Folkestone, hi-vis gilet over his double-breasted suit, Rees-Mogg announced that the government was delaying yet again the imposition of post-Brexit border checks on imports from the EU. He asked the public to celebrate this decision, on the grounds that it would save £1bn a year and help hard-pressed consumers by avoiding an increase in the cost of imported food. Enforcing post-Brexit checks, said the minister, “would have been an act of self-harm”.

You read that right. Jacob Rees-Mogg, arch-leaver and longtime loather of the EU, is now parroting lines from the remain campaign. He is admitting that implementing Brexit in full, honouring the 2016 promise to take back control of Britain’s borders, would be “an act of self-harm”.

There’s plenty to attack here, starting with the nerve of hailing this move as “saving” Britons £1bn, when this was £1bn that Britons would never have had to spend at all if it hadn’t been for Brexit. Or you could share the outrage of British farmers, appalled that, thanks to Brexit, they have been left at a serious competitive disadvantage: they now face onerous and costly checks when they ship their goods across the Channel, while French, Italian or Spanish farmers face no such hassle moving their products in the other direction. Or you could worry along with the British Veterinary Association, which warns that not checking food imports leaves Britain exposed to “catastrophic” animal diseases such as African swine fever – a risk that was reduced when Britain was part of “the EU’s integrated and highly responsive surveillance systems”. Or you could join the lament of the UK Major Ports Group, whose members have spent hundreds of millions of pounds building checking facilities, which now stand unused as “bespoke white elephants”.

But put all that aside for a moment and grasp the full meaning of Rees-Mogg’s admission. He and his fellow Brexiters once looked forward to these border checks, seeing them not merely as a price worth paying for leaving the EU but as a genuine benefit. Britain would at last be free to set its own food standards, superior to the EU’s. And yet now the minister admits that putting up barriers just makes food more expensive for British consumers and risks bankrupting British farmers: precisely the act of self-harm remainers always said it would be. The irony of hearing Rees-Mogg declare that “free trade is hugely advantageous to consumers” after he and his comrades pulled us out of the largest, most successful free trade bloc in the world – the European single market – would be funny if it weren’t so bitter.
