CliveH
Good news for Teachers as well! http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090626/tuk-new-school-freedom-on-how-to-teach-6323e80.html "Schools are to be given greater freedom over how they teach with the scrapping of the Government's National Strategies for education. The move will end centralised prescription of teaching methods and oversight of literacy and numeracy hours in primary schools and save the Government up to £100 a million a year currently spent on private consultants." Brian Kirby
Sorry to sound parochial, but I want home rule for England! Welsh indeed!
Guest Tracker
Brian Kirby - 2009-06-26 8:36 PM Sorry to sound parochial, but I want home rule for England! Welsh indeed! If you were to experience the bigotry, waste, ineptitude, incompetence, arrogance and jobs for the boys that the Welsh Assembly gets up to Brian - just like Westminster in fact - you might not be quite so keen to pay for yet another layer of parasitic beaurocracy. . Brian Kirby
Not another layer, just an English parliament, with English resident MPs, elected by English voters, and representing English constituencies, at Westminster. Matters of mutual concern to the Scots, Northern Irish and Welsh (mostly Defence, security, immigration, and cross border transport), can be debated in a joint co-ordinating committee comprising the Prime/First ministers, plus Defence and Transport etc as appropriate ministers of the four states. Meet four times per year?If negotiable with the other three states, I would opt for an elected President (Lord Protector? :-)) of the UK (to be based in Buckingham Palace), who alone would hold the power to decide whether British troops should be deployed overseas, and otherwise would hold executive powers somewhere between the US and French models, with the monarch (probably based in St Jame's palace or Clarance House) executing only ceremonial functions (opening new buildings etc). The rest of the Royal family would have to live off their "hump", or get jobs. Each member state of the UK to become otherwise fully independent in respect of health, education, transport, social services, justice, etc etc, and consequently to be fully responsible for revenue gathering and dispensation. To be clear, there would be no Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish constituencies represented at Westminster. That would save a considerable sum on the Civil List, would reduce the number of MPs, and also greatly reduce the amount of time necessary to agree English policy. That should about do it! Over :-)
CliveH
That would get my vote Brian. Extremely well and clearly set out. I am sure given the chance - most of us would vote for what you set out.
Big Momma
My wife is the Head of a Science Dept as well as having to teach a full daily programme. Ed balls on the News last night stated that under the 'new' teaching methodology, children who struggled would be guaranteed 1-1 teaching......... 8-) There are not enough Teachers available now so where are the extra going to come from to do the 1-1 sessions (?) Just more beauracratic spin with no substance, but it will probably sound good to the members of the public 'Not in the Know' :-(
