Greece bans UK tourists

Greece has banned Brits when it reopens to tourists due to our poor coronavirus record. The government has said they will accept tourists from a list of 29 countries when international flights resume on June 15.

But the UK has not made the cut as expected after Greek tourism minister Haris Theoharis told ITV News that the UK's record on coronavirus is currently not good enough. Brits were also told that they would be blacklisted from Cyprus when it reopens to tourists next month.

Looks like they've banned the French , Italians and Spanish n'all along with a whole hugging of countries ... Obviously other countries records on China Virus dont cut it either ... Nice try though

Yeah the way Bullet posted you'd think only the UK was banned *-) .........

He's obviously ignored Norway and Demark closing their borders to Sweden ;-) .......

And typically only you pair of utter dimwit clowns could "read" it that way. If either of you engaged a brain cell before bashing the keyboard you'd see the article lists the countries they've given the green light to. *-)

29 to be precise.....but UK is NOT one of them as it is banned for the reason they stated. As for any other country not listed, that's for the citizens of those countries to mither about and not UK citizens. Idiots.

Looks like Spain is missing me B-) .........

Then clear off there Hypocrite.

Wasn't there a fuss about whether an EU member country, like Greece, could "discriminate" against other member countries, like Farnce and Spain, by closing its border selectively? It's OK for an EU Member Country to lose it's borders to every other country for health reasons, but not to pick and choose because of Freedom of Movement rights? If so this would also prevent discrimination against UK until the end of the transition period.

Do you blame them? Our current death rate is 38,376, Greece is 175. Its shameful. We were supposed to be going there in the van this summer, for the firsts time in many years, not sure I could face it now even if they let us in. We have a lot to learn from our Greek friends.

Exactly. Not so long ago some were sneerily calling Greece a "basket case" country. How quickly thats changed but the Greeks aren't sneering....they're above that, they are just shocked and bewildered at our chaotic mis-management.

Greece is still a basket case country overall. It fell into what they, the Greeks, call 'The German Cage' when they joined the Euro. You are just picking out one aspect of the whole chaotic situation to evidence your point. Just as you did in your opening post.

The economy of Greece has been devastated. It currently holds tens of thousands of unprocessed refugees on behalf of the EU who are paying Greece to keep them. They are facing a mass invasion of hundreds of thousands if not millions of more refugees should Turkey open the doors of their camps as they have threatened to do. Greece is in a hole. There is no way out of the crisis. They cannot devalue their currency to make holidays cheaper. They have no industry other than olive production. And the country cannot borrow any money.

So, Greece has banned UK and other tourists from countries hard hit by COVID-19. Big news? Not unless you edit it the way that you have.

"They have no industry other than olive production"

Greece Exports

Mineral fuels including oil: US$11.9 billion (31.5% of total exports)

Pharmaceuticals: $2.2 billion (5.7%)

Machinery including computers: $2 billion (5.2%)

Aluminum: $1.9 billion (5.1%)

Plastics, plastic articles: $1.3 billion (3.5%)

Electrical machinery, equipment: $1.3 billion (3.4%)

Vegetable/fruit/nut preparations: $1.2 billion (3.2%)

Fruits, nuts: $1.1 billion (2.9%)

Dairy, eggs, honey: $785.6 million (2.1%)

Fish: $763.1 million (2%)

It may be a 'basket case' but it has humanity. Covid-19 deaths 170, UK 38,000 and rising. its not all about the money.

Had you read the link rather than jump to conclusion you'd have seen i posted verbatim the first and third para from the linked article. So there was no 'editing' by me at all. As i provided a link there was no need to paste the article in full as i expected anyone interested would read the article. Obviously i was wrong.

As an update; Greece have now decided to allow Brit visitors BUT they will be subject to strict testing. Those testing negative will be required to self-quarantine for seven days. Those testing positive will be required to quarantine under supervision for two weeks. Tests will be carried out on all visitors arriving from airports deemed high-risk by EASA. A total of 13 airports in the UK are on the list of airports located in affected areas with high risk of transmission of the COVID-19.

Seems a common sense approach to me.

Take out the petroleum which is franchised and you have just over $10 billion in exports. The UK exported $395 billion. That puts it into perspective.

Regards COVID-19; if you can guarantee that Greece recorded cases and deaths in the same manner that the UK did then you have a story. But, I think that you will find that very little testing was done and given Greece's agrarian nature, I can't see how many cases of COVID-19 would have been reported.

As for Bullet Guy; Why not see the bigger picture? Greece banning UK tourists was never the headline. What about EU countries flaunting the EU's rules on Freedom of Movement and making individual arrangements? The same rules that David Cameron was told could not be negotiated are being flouted by the very countries that demanded that the UK obey them. Surely the irony is not lost on you? *-)
