Looks like the special relationship is on the rocks.

I think that was pretty clear when Biden entered the white house and immediately threw out the bust of Churchill - a gift from England and the hero of our 'Mini-Trump'

Of course criminalising immigration is like criminalising prostitution - just drives it underground.

As a French police officer in Calais said years ago - you English need to sort out your black economy - thats what they are going for.

We don't need more laws - just enforcement of the ones we have got.

It is an article by a British academic so perhaps not “how others see us”. I’ve read and I agree with some of her observations e.g. the government proposals for dealing with asylum claimants who enter illegally appear to contravene obligations we signed up to in the Refugee Convention (another case of Priti Patel not listening to experts within her department?). Some of the cases she refers to put the onus on the government/executive to provide a solution to problems that are not of their making. E.g. the poor man who died of COVID because he was too scared to seek treatment because of his unlawful immigration status. He was entitled, as is everyone, whether legally here or not to be given emergency treatment. It is possible that he would still be alive but subject to immigration enforcement action. It is not established that his removal would have been inhumane or put him at risk of death nor that he would not have been allowed to remain had enforcement action been taken. As to the mother who claims that her autistic son’s deportation would cause his death, what immediately comes to my mind is if it was my son and all his efforts to oppose his removal, including exhausting all rights of appeal, I would go with him no matter what the consequences for me or the rest of my family unless those consequences also involved a loss of life.

Totally agree. We blamed the EU for our woes on immigration when all along it was successive UK governments who chose to ignore EU rulings on immigration and never bothered to enforce what we already had.

I'd like to live in a democracy, but when 42% of the vote gives you a 80 seat majority, that doesn't measure up to any definition of democracy. Greek: d?µ???at?a, demokratia, from demos 'people' and kratos 'rule

Yet you support a PR system where the ruling party would win power with a even smaller percentage of the vote *-) ..........

He doesn't even understand English Malc let alone any other language.

If you read further down there are tweets from people who speak the language and explain, "The subtitles have nothing to do with what is actually being said"

Which another explains the joke; "The real story is actually very funny. It is about retired circus elephants and the challenges of giving them a happy retirement. One elephant had formed a strong friendship with Ali - A camel, and there was talk about it being cruel separating them. Romeo and Juliet 21st century"

"They're talking about elephants. Make Votes Matter posted it with its fake subtitles and linked it to a page that said "April Fool" and explained about the elephants and made some serious points about improving FPTP."
