Little pinkies

Hope it's ok to post the following. Not used to this site yet.

One of the charities I support and try to raise money for is Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention. The original support was to raise money to open a new centre in Manchester which supports ALL the country and is the first of its kind in Europe. Now that has been achieved but obviously money is needed now for the research etc. Last year I wrote the words and music to a song and we raised quite a lot from the cd.

This coming Monday - and this is what I want to ask your support on is 'Pinkie Pinkie Week' .... sorry for the rather silly name, but everyone including men are being asked to paint just one fingernail pink... when anyone asks about it, it is the opening to tell about the work of Genesis.

Since 44,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the year I was diagnosed and 250 men also, this is really important to me to help other women, our children and grandchildren not to have to go through this. I still suffer fromthe after-effects of the chemo. Genesis have made major break throughs in gene therapy and I want us to insist that the Government looks into the causes of cancer, not just the treatment. Why - when the breakthroughs are being made - is the number so high and expected to be even higher in 2010........ is it pollution, additives, insecticides, fertilisers... we need answers. I have buried a dozen close friends in the last 12 months ... and I know I will be attending more funerals in the near future. I HATE this bl**dy disease with a vengeance. I don't want others to suffer.

Sorry for going on but I could go on all day about prevention, etc. Thanks for listening. Joy x

This is exactly what the forum is about, Joy - exchanging information and views (in a friendly fashion!)

As a cancer-survivor, this is a subject close to my heart too, and we constantly need to raise the profile of the problem which still exists in this high-tech, high-wealth world.

I'm doing the Race for Life on May 18th to raise money for Cancer Research.

Just in case anyone missed my original thread, the link is http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/janineharley

Post away Joy, and you,ve touched on a subject that has affected most people directly or indirectly and hope that 'Genesis' gets all the support it deserves.

Interesting that you mention ' additives and insecticides'. These have been with us for the last 50 years or so and I now feel we are paying for the accumulated effects.

Such a pity when you think of it that so much funding for research and treatment of cancer has to be raised by private means, and while I always give my support often feel this should be something fully covered by our various health authorities.

Having been successfully treated for this desease some years ago I can only ask that if anyone feels there,s a problem then time is the crucial factor. No good saying ' i,ll feel better tomorrow' and putting things off, ( which is usually typical of me) and have it checked out as soon as possible, and if this involves ruffling a few feathers then so be it.

The fact that hospices in this country have to raise their own funding is disgraceful too.

We have a fantastic children's hospice in Shropshire and they have to raise £3 million per year to stay open. Where is the help from the government?

The music festival we help to run in Bridgnorth in August has this as their charity this year so I've learnt a lot about it recently. It provides fantastic support for children and their families at such a desperate time in their lives, but has to raise every penny by hard slog.

How childrens hospices have to survive on private donations is totally beyond me Jan, but there is a upside for those who have lost someone in that raising funds often gives them a purpose and outlet for their grief. and their involvement brings them a better understanding of this. or any other illness, and brings them closer to those in the same circumstances. Does,nt bring back a loved one but does help you come to terms with that loss.

There appears to be a lot of support on the forum for charities, as some of you may have read on here or seen the pix that Angie and I belong to, for want of a better description, a drama group who put on shows each year to raise money for different charities. Now this is normally for local charities and we raise around 7/8k a year for having fun. Those that cough up for a ticket get to see a variety show that last's approx 2 hours with a break at around 1 hour where they are served fish and chips (all in the price of the ticket (approx £12 depending on charity) there is a bar which is table waited throughout the whole show, just put up your hand and they will come to you. I will however be prepared to put the name of a charity forward to the commitee for the proceeds of a show and raffle if someone can give me good reason and is prepared after discussions to abide by our rules, because of location of show and the fact that you all live far and wide there may be a logistical problem, but I am sure that you will all love another excuse to have a weekend away in your van. If anyone is intrested and does not want to discuss on here please feel free to mail me, I will also be happy to visit and discuss antwhere in the country as I do travel most of it in the course of a six week period

Good to see you doing your bit Geof, and enjoying it as well. Quite a few of these shows around and our own local version comprises of the ladies from the old age centre who over the years have raised thousands for worthy causes around here. This usually goes for 'extras' such as televisions in hospital wards etc, or as recently, help with funding to send a youngster to America for specialist treatment with childrens hospices and the RNLI being the other main recipients.

Still think most of this should be government funded, but even with all the bad and negative press we read about nobody comes close to the Brits when it comes to dipping in their own pockets, and at least thats something we can be proud of.

Hi Geoff and Angie, sorry not been on site much as problems at home and then away a couple of days to return to problems at home ... :-( but I will post as soon as I can.

I don't know what area you are in. I wouldn't want to push for support if you are too far away, I know how important local support can be.

I have to say you should be very proud of what you have done, as you look really professional - beautiful costumes. Everything i do is sort of a 'fun' thing as a lot of the children involved are from rather needy families, but they do enjoy themselves and it gives them a sense of helping others worse off than themselves.

(I hope I have your names right - I can't seem to view the letters at the same time as answering.) I will try and post a few pictures of the children at our fund-raising ventures.

Can I just say what a lovely thread. I am getting a bit warey of posting on some sites as they always seem to turn a bit weird.)

Jan I will try and get onto the computer and support your fundraising run. I will ask my ladies but I normally just ask them to give a pound each as we support and receive so many requests. It would only mean around a £20 donation to you. Is that ok and if so where shall I send it? Do the moderators have your address?

Love Joy (Mel is trying to sort my avatar out.... :-) )
