May accused of bribery

If only the government had introduced a strategy to tackle the obvious issue which was that prosperity was unfairly spread throughout the UK before the referendum, we might not have been facing Brexit at all. Too much, too little too late (with apologies to Johnny Mathis) :-(

UK Governments have passed the buck for regeneration of the less prosperous parts of the country to the EU for decades ;-) ............

So its the EU who should've spent more of OUR money in the UK >:-) ......

Indeed so lets take a look at May's Brexit bribe in comparison to what UK regions receive from the EU.

May's Stronger Towns Fund - £1.6bn over six years / £266m per year.

European Regional Development & European Social Funds to UK regions 2014-2020 - £9.34bn over 6 years / £1.56bn per year.

Nope, the EU funding had been alongside central government funding until 2010.

It was the austerity agenda that ripped 60% of local authority budgets.

It's interesting to see that spending money " up north " ( i.e. outside the south east of England ) is described by some politicians as bribery.

( Bit late to start now though - they should have done it BEFORE the EU referendum ).

The Fund is a pathetically small amount of money: just 0.05% of total government spending.

It equates to £145m/year for the North of England or less than £10 per person. It is £80m for the Midlands, or £8 per person.

So perhaps on the side of the bus it should have read 'Vote Leave, Get a Tenner'.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-46443700

Very true and UN special rapporteur Prof. Philip Alston on visiting UK last year to look at extreme poverty where austerity was a major contributing factor, condemned government's "punitive, mean-spirited and often callous" treatment of the country's poorest and most vulnerable, in a damning report.

“The United Kingdom’s impending exit from the European Union poses particular risks for people in poverty, but the government appears to be treating this as an afterthought,”

He went on to say ministers were in a state of denial over poverty in UK.

Nope, I'm saying that as a higher rate tax payer the business I run qualified for an EU grant, that produced more jobs for new staff paying tax and moved other existing staff (including myself) up the "pay scale" to pay more in tax.

Leaving aside most of the above, the policy looks to me very close to electoral fraud by vote buying - the vote in question being parliamentary. Promise some extra taxpayers' money to a few, well chosen, constituencies with suitably biddable MPs, to induce them to vote for May's Brexit deal. Sailing very close to the wind, IMO. Luff next? Oh I hope so!! :-D

Well - if it's the only way these places will ever get any money - I'm all for it.

While we are at it - Let's cancel HS2 - and share that money around deprived areas as well !

Proper ones that create proper jobs, not hobby businesses that cannot be scaled up.

My pay rise came from the business growing, in the time since we got the "EU bung", it has been repaid many times over in taxes.

Most active and informed "UK bosses" from businesses large and small know that they too can access grants if they can meet the criteria. You were probably spending too much time in the yacht club and not at the breakfast business seminars run by your local councils business development teams so missed the briefing.

I can concur with the above with hundreds of real life examples. I worked on a team that channelled millions of pounds of funding some of which was EU money into thousands of businesses across the North East from 2001 to 2008. We did everything from helping farms through foot and mouth and helping them diversify to recover to helping businesses across the board of all business sectors grow and develop through technology projects. The results saw significant growth across all sectors which of course led to further employment and ultimately pay back in tax. Everybody wins. I am sure it also allowed a lot of those businesses to ride out the world financial crash which unfortunately followed in 2008/9.

Sadly there will be no assistance of this kind in the future I reckon. Public sector funding will dry up and of course there will be nothing from the EU. This bung is pathetic to be honest. The North East alone stands to lose 16% of its GDP in a no deal Brexit. Thats £7 billion a year. As the only net export region it will be wiped out. This bung will be like slapping a sticking plaster on a bursting dam.

So that's two "self made men" that found the forms too difficult?

Still at least it allows me to retire at 55 and go travelling without having to rent the house out and live in a thirty year old camper with a dinghy in tow. Or having to carry on working like poor old Anthhhhony, at least i can understand his hatred of migrants now I know he is a hod carrier - they obviously came over here and work so much harder than him - the perfect example of taking our jobs eh?

Credit card socialism - don't cha love it! If only you two had embraced it you would be so much better off.
