Made in 1963 in an era before bad language, drugs, violence or sex scenes became what over paid movie makers decided we all want to watch.

Sure the humour, and the acting, are both American and corny but what a refreshing change to watch a 55 year old film with a young and impressionable grand child without any concerns about the suitability of it's content.

Progess eh?

Where are we heading, I wonder, with this current foul mouthed violent dysfunctinal portrayal of the 'modern' world that has permeated it's way into our society.

Hhmm.....i think there are more warnings about content now than ever before and at least cinema movies back in the 60s/70s were simply classified U for sugary sweet stuff like Doris Day anyone could view, A rating for minors only accompanied by an adult, or X rating for the adults. I've no idea what the ratings are now as i've not been to a cinema in years.

But now we get prior warnings about content on news reports fgs! Imo i'd rather children were made aware of that reality than the manner in which Hollywood glamourises violence purely for entertainment value. But then some would argue 60's Bond movies fall into that category and the 'sex' value of Dr No for example where Raquel Welch emerges from the sea in 'skimpy' (for that era!) bikini, would have the Mary Whitehouse lot spitting fury! Shocking stuff.....that 'girl' should be fully covered with Victorian bathing costume!!

A few months ago i watched a drama documentary about Churchill. It was good but ruined from the beginning by silly 'snowflakery' announcing, "viewer discretion advised as some scene content involves smoking". Jeeez.... *-)

Big deal....Churchill smoked cigars....get over it and stop pandering to snowflakes. :-|

As a child I can remember watching mainstream TV stuff like Westerns, The Saint, The Avengers etc where people were bashed over the head unconscious, then woke up a couple of minutes later with nothing more than a headache *-)

Which seems a lot more dangerous than the graphic TV sex & violence we have now - because it gave the impression that bashing people unconscious with a chair or cosh doesn't really damage them *-)

If you like cheesy movies you want to watch Spanish TV Rich :D ..........

That said they also show some filth too........had to turn over after just 5 minutes of a American film that involved simulated sex with a doll 8-) ........

Globalization and the internet has certainly shifted the boundaries of what is acceptable as entertainment ;-) ........

The same with language.......I can speak lower deck just as well as anyone ;-) ........

That's where I used to leave it, but its now become common parlance among the younger generation, which has maybe inured its effect? :-| ...........

I was always told bad language is a sign of limited education.........Which is interesting as I tend to use it sparingly, whilst a certain headmasters son I know uses it all the time :-> .......

Me too, having worked fishing boats for some years I became immune to the 'everyday' language and like you I tend to leave it where it belongs.

Bad language used to be seen as an inadequate grasp of the English language in as much as it highlights the inability, or laziness, of the user to find appropriate adjectives but these days it seems to have become the accepted norm in everyday language.

It is my perception that the majority of ladies are unimpressed by cussing so maybe one day blokes will cotton on and stop using it - but I won't hold my breath.

The internet and mobile phones that enable faceless communication have a lot to answer for.

So bad language always was everyday language in many places.

Maybe its just that now the media is starting to represent that?

I still find it hard to swear in front of women because I was brought up not to do.

I'm not sure I'm right though - what about sex equality?

I hear plenty of women swearing, and was surprised how freely young women use the word 'bitch' these days. I've always thought 'bitch' to be a foul insult, but some even call their mates 'bitches' nowadays
