Yes the architect of the wonderful universal credit thats left thousands of families struggling to pay bills and buy food and seen a massive rise in child poverty gets his gong. IDS. Nice. To be pedantic IDS wasn't the Architect - he was the Implementer, and it was his implementation of it which is causing all the problems.. Universal Credit is basically a Good Idea. Roll all benefits into one for simplicity, and pay them monthly so people get used to managing their income over a month. Problem is people are skint when they apply, and even if their claim is dealt with properly (which it usually isn't) they have to wait 5 weeks for the first payment. This has obviously caused severe problems, eviction homelessness, crime, and rehousing in B&B at far greater expense etc. So now the Government is giving advance payments before the UC claim is checked - enabling the fraudsters make multiple false claims. So rather than saving the taxpayers money its costing us more, :-S Especially when you factor in the cost to victims of crime and other agencies - police, courts, NHS, etc Then to make matters worse the Government is paying housing benefit to the claimant instead of the landlord, so the Government can wash its hands of the state of the accomodation.
