No-deal Brexit: Disruption at Dover 'could last six months'

Dover and other Channel ports face disruption for up to six months if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, ministers have said.

The "worst case scenario" warning comes after analysis of likely traffic flows, if customs checks are delayed.

Despite the wails of "Project Fear"....now reduced to a wimper, UK Gov obviously fear this as when i returned back to Dover in August the M20 was lined with miles of cones. Talking to a couple of British truck drivers on the same ferry they told me the works include building a huge parking area to try and avoid Operation Stack.

Hope they remember to make parking spaces for Brexiters to enjoy their 'holiday'. (lol)

Kent voted overwhelmingly Leave in the referendum, 59%.....but now want an "urgent cash injection" of £20 million to help locals around the looming gridlock. Funny but the significance of Dover port was explained at the time so Kent Brexiters should fund their own stupidity. Brexit voting Raab openly admitted he didn't realise the importance of Dover port....and he was Brexit Secretary! *-)

Oh wait a minute....we've got another bloke in now but he suffers memory loss over EU tariffs and dates. I wonder if he knows where Dover is let alone the importance of the port! And then we wonder why the country is going to hell in a hand basket! *-)

Common sense tells us there are about the same number of lorries travelling both ways because those bringing stuff in will return whether fully loaded or not.

And if they have a long wait IF they wait to bring our much needed immports across the channel - who is going to pay for that *-)

How do they propose to relieve it after 6 months *-)

I expect they mean they'd hope to have the backlog cleared by then.......to make way for the next! *-)

It will bring a whole new definition too "traffic jam"! :-(

Probably yes - because they have to run to a timetable even if the lorries are stuck in customs

Do I have to explain the difference between the capacity of the ferries, and the capacity of customs to process the lorries?

Do I have to explain what happens when the ferries can carry 100 lorries an hour and the customs can only process 40 lorries an hour?

Are you saying the solution to long customs delays and tariffs is bigger lorry parks? *-)

Very few lorries (if any) make ferry bookings in Dover - they negotiate freight rates in advance to go on the next available ferry at the same price. Just as well as they wont have a clue when they are going to clear customs with their just-in-time deliveries.

Oh and your link says the delay costs the haulage contractor £1 a minute. Brexiteers seem to be under the delusion that lorry delays are someone else's problem - but who do you think pays in the end .*-)

So delusional they probably think they will be exempt from any price increases! *-)

The final question shows how desperate the situation is when you have to invite people to send in ideas for an alternative solution!

Goods vehicles travelling to mainland Europe

Chart 4 (Table RORO0101) shows that the number of goods vehicles

(powered vehicles and unaccompanied trailers) travelling to mainland

Europe from the UK rose by 3 per cent between 2014 and 2015, from 2.9

to 3.0 million. The number of UK-registered vehicles travelling to mainland

Europe fell by 10 per cent (313,000 to 283,000) while the number of foreignregistered

vehicles rose by 4 per cent (1.9 million to 2.0 million).

Irrespective of where the lorries are registered, If they are transporting goods to or from UK, and the cost of their journey increases through Brexit delays, who do you think the hauliers are going to pass their increased costs on to?

Don't you understand that will make our imports more expensive - so we have to pay more.

And our exports more expensive so we sell less.

I think there are many others who don't realise the cost of lorry transport is passed on to them.

When I was in the business British registered lorries had the highest road and fuel tax in Europe - the Government found it a handy stealth tax to tax lorries because voters like him didn't realise they were paying it. So British International Road Haulage was going the same way as Britsh Merchant shipping - taxed and regulated out of business. Those who could registered their lorries abroad like the shipping companies do, or transferred their work to foreign registered lorries with big fuel tanks they filled up across the channel, so the British Exchequer got no tax revenue at all.

The increase cost of what? ;-) ..........a custom declaration.......ie a piece of paper *-) .........

BUT.......As you've already admitted most of those 2 million EU trucks will be returning EMPTY ;-) .........

So NO declaration required :-| ...........

Looks to me like the longest queues will be in France >:-) ..........

Cant see them being happy with that (lol) (lol) (lol) ..........
