I see the elephant in the room everyone is ignoring because its too difficult.

We all have to die to make room for the next generation, or it will be standing room only.

Population is rising above what the earth can support - hence deforestation, pollution, climate change, flooding, housing crisis, migration, starvation etc

We thin out grapes on the vine to give the others a chance to grow.

But we can't do that with people.

If we manage to cure covid, cancer and everything else that restricts population growth -

what will restrict population growth to a level the earth can support (?) 8-)

Very easy to deride everyone else's idea without suggesting one of our own

Just ignore the problem of over population and hope it will go away.

But it won't.

It will keep getting worse.

We should at least credit him with the courage to tackle the elephant that few people dare.

Although he can afford to because he is not facing an election and doesn't need to be popular.

What he doesn't seem to realise is the poor plebs and funny foreigners are usually contributors.

Its the wealthy rentiers supporting the Tory Party who are not.

Ah but you need to have a read of this.

In developed countries the birth rate is falling dramatically. This very soon will lead to another migrant crisis but not one where we are trying to deter migrants but one where we are desperate for them. If this study is correct we will need migrants more than ever. These will likely come from Africa as it will be one of the few areas where population growth is still on the rise. The white populations could slowly die out! 8-)

Interesting link Thanks

'Since the start of 2020 the world's population has already increased by 43 million despite the best efforts of Covid'

'The number of over 80-year-olds will soar from 141 million in 2017 to 866 million in 2100.'

.... and the fewer youngsters taxes will have to support them whilst still paying off BoJo's debts for the likes of Dishi Rishi's eat out to spread it around scam, and the unusable PPE from his cronies

Apparently London Transport set up recruitment offices in India in the 1950's

Might have to do that again :-S

It's one thing deciding in principle that the country (or the world) needs a smaller human population to achieve a better state of some sort but working out how to reduce the population numberss (or indeed to contrive any change of this sort) begs questions to which it has proved impossible for anyone to find a morally acceptable answer.

The problem is who can decide (especially in a democracy) who is to be prevented from reproducing or from living their lives in order to engineer a change in population?

This is worth reading: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics_in_the_United_States

Eugenics developed as a movement in the USA in the late 19th Century and it was pursued actively in one way or another until the 1970s, ie long after the world knew what the Nazis had been up to applying their version. They were pursuing an "improved quality" of humanity rather than a reduction in population numbers but they considered a wide range of interventions which could serve to reduce population numbers, ranging from forcible sterilisation and even euthanasia. In lots of States laws were passed to serve eugenic objectives. The last of these was not repealed until 1976. The theories and methods of the US eugenics movement were adopted by the Nazis in Germany when they came to power in the 1930s and this led to their "Final Solution".

In my part of the U.K. all ages pay taxes , not just the youngsters.

Fair point - I should have said wealth creators instead of taxpayers.

Not necessarily. We are currently plagued by low productivity (actually have been since before we joined the EEC). So, if we invest to improve productivity we can produce more from a smaller workforce, and should also be able to pay that workforce better. Win, win! :-D
