Police officers jailed

The two pieces of scum that took "selfies" of two murdered girls at a crime scene they had been assigned to guard, have been sentenced to 2 years and 9 months. Not long enough imo but at least they're out of the force.

Quite how or why anyone could indulge in such evil acts is beyond me. The pair are utterly depraved and sick.

In victim impact statements, family members described the defendants as a “disgrace” to the police family and to mankind.

The women’s mother, Mina Smallman, said the officers’ actions were a “betrayal of catastrophic proportions” and a “sacrilegious act”.

She said: “Jaffer and Lewis callously and without any regard for our dead girls’ bodies committed, to my mind, a sacrilegious act.

“We were told ...the police officers whose task it was to protect and preserve the crime scene had, in fact, for their own amusement, took selfies, posing for pictures with our dead daughters.

“We were horrified. I had never heard of anything so macabre.

“Those police officers felt so safe, so untouchable, they felt they would take photos of our murdered daughters. Those officers dehumanised our children.

Ignore the so called " jail sentence ".

The small print tells you that they will only serve half that time in jail.

Sadly yes though the judge could, and should have, put a minimum before release, eg 2 years.

I often wonder what sort of backgrounds people like this pair come from.

Its enough to stop them doing it again and put others off.

Especially since their careers are in ruins - and they are going to jail as police officers.

IMO People don't commit crime because they think the sentences make it worthwhile.

They do it because they know they have a very good chance of getting away with it.

In the days when they used to publicly hang pickpockets, there were people in the crowd picking the pockets of the people watching the hangings. They knew they had almost zero chance of being brought to justice. (They probably knew the poor soul being hung was innocent, framed to get a reward.)

The way to reduce crime is to improve the detection rate.

Unfortunately it takes brains to do that.

Wheras anyone can just increase the penalties for the tiny unfortunate minority who get caught.

And increasing the sentences plays to the gallery of people who are too thick to see beyond increasing the punishments :-S

So your plan is to increase the detection rate - and when you've caught more people - give them softer sentences ?

softer?

Do you think a police officer losing his career and pension and going to an English jail - as a police officer on a charge like that - is going to be a soft sentence?

But to answer your question I think catching twice as many people and giving them half the sentence would be far more effective.

Say, for instance, you have 100 lorry drivers who tailgate. 99 get away with it and 1 causes carnage. All equally guilty in my book. But 99 get away with it and only 1 gets punished. How fair is it to increase his sentence?

Or How many other police officers have behaved equally badly and got away with it?

I forgot to mention, one of the police officers, 47 year old Jaffer, resigned and left the Met before the case went to court.

Apparently under the Police (Conduct) Regulations 2020, serving officers are allowed to resign or retire without requiring permission but still face misconduct matters as appropriate.
