Seriously ill man denied benefits dies

Welcome to 2019 under Tory cruelty. How the hell can such happen when we wouldn't even allow a dog to be treated like this? :-(

64 year old Stephen Smith, a man with multiple debilitating illnesses who was denied benefits and deemed fit to work, sparking a national outcry over the government’s welfare system, has died. He had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, osteoarthritis and an enlarged prostate. Shocking pictures showed him emaciated in hospital with pneumonia as his weight dropped to six stone, leaving him barely able to walk.

Smith, who lived alone, said in February that he did not know where to turn as his health deteriorated. “I could only make it to the kitchen to make food once a day. I had no muscles in the back of my leg, which meant I couldn’t stand up at all, and had to lean or sit down all the time, but they were telling me I was fit for work.”

Disgusting......who the hell in their right mind votes for this bunch of low lifes killing people off without a care in the world....as long as they're alright? Sooner this lot are gone the better. Very nasty people.

Totally disgusting. WTF has happened to the Tory party? Whats worse is there is a rather large element of the public that seem gleeful at the way some of them are carrying on. Until its them that one day are on the receiving end of their disgusting policies. Labour should be flipping miles ahead in the polls but sadly I think they have gone too far the other way now. Their stance on Brexit is shocking and Corbyn is just the wrong person to be leading them. He needs to go.

Been infiltrated by the far right....a magnet for 'em. Time they were held to account.

Whats worse is there is a rather large element of the public that seem gleeful at the way some of them are carrying on.

It reflects the base thug mentality which has been encouraged to flourish. I wonder how many have stopped to think, 'that could have been me'? Only those with a moral compass and conscience, and the types you related to have neither.

Good God it get's worse.....if that's possible.

It took a year for Smith’s benefits to be reinstated. To get them, at the end of last year the 64-year-old was forced to obtain a pass to discharge himself from hospital; ravaged with pneumonia, he had to leave his bed to attend a tribunal and fight his case.

To add further insult, Stephens benefit money the Tory bastards denied him so long, will be used to pay for his funeral.

FFS!!!

(warning; link contains pretty shocking pictures)

The question you should be asking is why you are not blaming them? You need to put your allegiance to the Tory party aside for a minute. Stephens death occurred under their watch.......nobody elses. They bear ultimate responsibility. Instead as usual you follow their line of blame shifting and throwing some lower down under the bus.

Assessors do what the DWP (government) demands and that is achieve set targets, cleverly phrased by the DWP as "Key Performance Indicators". https://www.disabilityrightsuk.org/news/2017/may/dwp-has-80-targets-refusing-benefit-reconsiderations

They deliver on whatever target (KPI) is set and once achieved, the bar is set higher until the targets become unachievable (or achievable if you don't have a conscience, as in this case). You final comment is beneath contempt but indicative of the repulsive attitude shown by politics you support.

Thankfully there is now every indication of an inquiry being held into Stephens appalling treatment at the hands of the DWP and Government. It may be that Rudd was handed the poisoned chalice late in the day but certainly her predecessor, McVey, must be held to account.

Only those with a moral compass and conscience will read all of this;

Welfare sanctions are killing people with chronic illnesses

https://politicsandinsights.org/2018/10/13/welfare-sanctions-are-killing-people-with-chronic-illnesses-such-as-type-1-diabetes/

In a statement that can at best be described as utterly deplorable gaslighting, a spokesperson for the DWP said: “The ‘in work progression trials’ helped encourage claimants to increase their hours, seek out progression opportunities and take part in job-related training.”

“The trials delivered positive results for many of the lowest paid people who claim Universal Credit and we are now considering the findings.”

The Conservatives have a track record of denying empirical findings that don’t match their ideological expectations. They simply deny and dismiss any criticism of their prejudiced and discriminatory policies. Damian Green, the Work and Pensions Secretary at the time of the UN inquiry report, famously claimed that cuts to support for disabled people did “not necessarily mean worse outcomes.”

Then read;

The government uses techniques of neutralisation

It's this gross attitude which led UN special rapporteur Prof, Philip Alston to comment, "UK government treatment of the country's poorest and most vulnerable is "punitive, mean-spirited and often callous" with ministers in "a state of denial".

I honestly don't know how you can support such vile policies when the facts are clearly damning. Stop and think just for a minute and imagine Stephen Smith was your own brother. Would you be making the same excuses? Anyone with an ounce of compassion and moral decency should realise.....this could happen to me and we should be doing everything to ensure it never occurs again.

https://politicsandinsights.org/2018/10/13/welfare-sanctions-are-killing-people-with-chronic-illnesses-such-as-type-1-diabetes/

Then read;

The government uses techniques of neutralisation

It's this gross attitude which led UN special rapporteur Prof, Philip Alston to comment, "UK government treatment of the country's poorest and most vulnerable is "punitive, mean-spirited and often callous" with ministers in "a state of denial".

Or perhaps the assessor is not incompetent ;-) .........

But a government employee with a Socialist agenda? :-| .......

Seeing as you lot support Corbyn......you will prolly do any despicable thing to get the muppet elected >:-) .......

I support the policies of weeding out benefit cheats ;-) ........

We also need to weed out the incompetents, along with the loony lefty Socialists with an agenda who infest our civil service *-) .........

So do i......like glass back bone idlers who openly boast on a forum about taking benefits they "never needed".

As I said at the time I was amazed I was eligible for tax credits.........I only applied partly as a joke and partly out of curiosity to see if I qualified as the advert in our local rag suggested ;-) .........

Which proved to me that Gordon Brown tax credit system was way to generous......way to easy to access.......and gave big business the excuse to pay minimum wage, and help fuel the migrant crisis *-) ........

In short...... another SOCIALIST Cock Up >:-) .........

Over 60 million treated by the NHS each year

And your point is?

Wonder what that number will be once the Tories sell it off (to Trump probably). Since they stopped giving free dental care poor people pull their own teeth out now. Will they be performing their own open heart surgery when they cant afford two hundred quid a month for health insurance?

60 million treated and your picking up on one case . Remember Mid-Staffordshire Hospital ? If your playing games then who's watch was that under ?

Its a thread about one particular case WTF do you think we are going to discuss? Its not an isolated incident though. Some surveys suggest Tory Austerity has lead to 120000 extra deaths in the UK.

This case reminded me of the tragic award winning film "I Daniel Blake". I suggest you track it down and watch it.

Very nasty people.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2019/apr/21/stephen-smith-liverpool-seriously-ill-emaciated-man-denied-benefits-dwp-dies

Why are you blaming the Tories? :-S ..........

His assessor was clearly incompetent......and as a probable resident of Liverpool more likely a Labour voter *-) .......

If at the time you were in some way attempting to impress it came over more as an act of gross cynicism and abuse of the state benefit system and what you've just said again appears to confirm that. There is no such thing as the "Gordon Brown tax credit system" either, it's set by HMG and overseen by the DWP/HMRC...period. As for your ridiculous deflection over migrants, Brian posted an excellent link a while back and took you to task over that very issue and destroyed your ludicrous claims based on nothing other than pure xenophobia.

That you totally ignored the op posting and links relevant to the matter speak volume, As i asked you in a previous post.....consider for a minute Stephen Smith was your own brother, would you be so flippantly dismissive in the remarks you've made? Just stop for a minute and think......'that could have been me' and we should be doing everything to ensure it never happens again...not making light jokes about such consequences.

Absolutely right and when UN special rapporteur Prof. Alston carried out a study on extreme poverty in the UK and parts with a damning testimony that, " UK austerity has inflicted 'great misery' on citizens with “punitive, mean-spirited, and often callous” austerity policies driven by a political desire to undertake social re-engineering rather than economic necessity. Government has remained determinedly in a state of denial."

It begs the question how the worlds *allegedly* fifth richest nation in the world can treat it's citizens in such an appalling manner. Prof. Alstons full report can be read here......for those who care.

https://www.ohchr.org/documents/issues/poverty/eom_gb_16nov2018.pdf

During my lifetime we've had a few Tory governments and most would probably say years under Thatcherism were the worst.....but i cannot think of a Tory government (albeit coalition) worse than this current one denying people financial help and forcing the terminally ill and dying people to work. That happened under the most heinous and wicked regime of Nazism 80 years ago who cynically hung the sign Arbeit Macht Frei (work sets you free) over the entrance to every concentration camp which were set up for forced labour, Paths leading to the gas chambers were often given names such as Weg zum Himmel (road to heaven).

Pure evil on so many levels and we're letting history repeat itself.

So your still trying to link Socialism's unsavory history to the Tories eh Bullet? *-) .......

You have forgotten that Adolf Hitler was elected leader of the National ***SOCIALIST*** German Workers’ Party, or Nazi Party in June 1923 >:-) .......

It's high time you lot owned your own sh*t ;-) ........

Here you go Dave, a primer for you on Nazism (AKA National Socialism). :-D http://tinyurl.com/8xfqsve

This quote from the article shows why your insistence on conflating Nazism and Socialism is perverse.

"The Nazi Party's precursor, the Pan-German nationalist and antisemitic German Workers' Party, was founded on 5 January 1919. By the early 1920s the party was renamed the National Socialist German Workers' Party – to attract workers away from left-wing parties such as the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Communists (KPD) – and Adolf Hitler assumed control of the organization."

So, not the same thing at all, but just a name to draw in the gullible. It is not the name that counts, it is the ideology, and that is very different to what is normally understood as socialism.

You can call things by any name you choose. You could call a dog Oracle, but it wouldn't make it worth consulting, would it? So with National Socialism, it was, and is, fascist - the political opposite of socialist.
