Violet1956
If ever there was a song that informed us what slavery was like it was “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”. We sang it in my junior school when listening to “Singing Together” on the wireless. An anthem that subtely reminds us of the suffering of slaves and one which does not seek to excuse it. How I wish the RFU would consider their stance. I abhor the the intellectual snobbery that suggests that the people who sing it have no idea of the song's roots. What's next for the censors "The Fields of Athenry"?
jumpstart
Can’t see what it’s got to do with slavery. Have spent years playing Rugby, we obviously did sing it ,god knows why. I don’t see it as offensive. I used to have a Golliwog, along with other child’s toys. Nobody then saw it as offensive. They do now but it’s just a black doll. Cabbage patch dolls come in various coloures, are they offensive .If so then people need to become more tolerant.
