Britain’s Supreme Court said on Friday it would consider whether to hear an appeal from the British government which wants to stop Europe’s top court from examining a case seeking to determine whether the country can unilaterally reverse Brexit.

Scottish politicians who are opposed to Britain leaving the European Union want the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to clarify whether London can withdraw its notification to leave without permission from the EU’s other member states.

So May now wants to stop legal clarification on reversal of Article 50. Wow... ....very dangerous territory.

Forgot to say, the Supreme Court ruled against the government, so the European Court hearing is still on for 27 November. Might be interesting.

Yes it's a step in the right and sensible direction. I was just amazed that May attempted to block our own judicial process though and seems it's not so much a democracy Brexiters want after all, more a Totalitarian regime.

Interesting article here;

There are several versions of what democracy really is, or should be, so it will indeed be interesting to see just who the ECJ considers to be ultimately responsible running the UK and our own British version of collective democracy formulated over hundreds of years - well before the EU existed!.

Main funder of Brexit still under criminal investigation, May blocking a request from security services (why??) to investigate Banks prior to the referendum, a FOI request to May totally ignored as she refuses to come clean on the matter, May misleading at best, lying at worst over article 50 then blocking attempts to at legal clarification......and yet you're more concerned about the matter now going before the ECJ.

I know you are very much pro-Brexit but does it not concern you in the least the democracy you treasure so much has not only been blatantly subverted, attempts have been made by May to thwart due process of law?

As ever you jump to conclusions that suit your own point of view with your carefully selected snippets to support your own bias towards EU control over aspects of UK life.
Very much pro Brexit is incorrect, very much pro British is correct as I do happen to believe that the UK does not need the EU for the UK to do better in the world than we are/have as part of the unidirectional monolith that the EEC has morphed into.
That said I also believe that to throw away a close working relationship with our EU neighbours would be foolhardy, but whether part of that neighbour should be allowed to pry into and dictate over our own internal affairs is highly debateable - which is partly what will make it so interesting.

Brexiteers seem to think that the ECJ is the enemy here and that once control is released to the ToryKipper party (as they are now know) everything will be lovely, fair and "democratic". Just look at em! Would you buy a second hand car of any of them? Taking back control is one thing but just be careful who you hand it to.

Not sure which conclusions you believe i've 'jumped to suit my own pov'....that of the first paragraph of my post which are factual points, or that of the second paragraph?

Regards the first para, all four points have been widely published and long out in the public domain. You'd have to have been living in a cave not to have heard or read about them and as one involves an ongoing criminal investigation, imo the entire proceedings of Brexit should have been put on hold until that matter has been resolved. It's a very serious matter. As for the second para, i believe we can safely conclude you are not and never have been in the Remain camp and your views and posts certainly indicate that you are not. If not a Brexiter then you can only be an Abstainer......that's ok, there were lot's of "don't knows" so you wouldn't be alone. I'm British too and pro-common sense......which is just one of many reasons i voted to Remain and far from shy or ashamed to say so. For me it was utter madness to throw the wrecking ball into something which was working even if it needed a few tweaks here and there, and millions of people benefited from it. Johnson, Farage et al trotted out the usual hyperbole and whipped up the hysteria over a mad game none had an exit plan for. How insane is that? Not one of them had thought it through properly and when handed the mantle to 'get on with it'.....they all ran off!!!

You seem to be trying to do a bit of a Boris....'having cake and eating it' but that's based on pure self greed and never going to work. You don't like the 'unidirectional monolith' you feel the EEC represents, think we 'don't need the EU'.....yet don't want to throw away any working relationship with them. Can you not see that's exactly what Brexiteers want to throw away?

Unity is strength and the more rabid pro-Brexiters see that unity as a threat to their far right extremist views. It's been drip fed for a number of years and some folk swallowed it hence the mass euphoria and racial hatred which spilled out post referendum 'partying'.

That isn't the issue that is being tried Rich. The case relates only to whether the UK can revoke its Article 50 notice should it so wish, or whether the Lisbon treaty means it has to leave the EU irrespective.

We (the UK, which is to say our freely elected sovereign parliament, remember) signed the Lisbon treaty in the full knowledge (and having agreed to the condition) that the legalities of the treaty, should they be challenged, would be determined by the European Court.

Because you voted for this country to leave the EU.......then promptly run off to spend money in Spain to avoid the rising costs of Brexit British prices. That's hypocrisy. You should be staying here paying the high costs you voted for and inflicted on others who didn't vote to throw themselves off a cliff.

No, you just didn't want any EU/non-EU migrants coming here. That's what you thought you'd be able to stop but as you've found it's not quite turned out that way. The only people you have pulled the drawbridge up on are British who previously enjoyed border free seamless travel.

Germany Calling.......Germany Calling .......

The former 1921 Socialist leader of Germany would be proud of you ..........

Brextremists calling ... Brextremists calling....
All Britain's Unelected Establishment and Hangers On will be proud of you ....

Correction...... Brit calling .....Brit calling .........

Some of us aren't ashamed to be British........Nor am I ashamed of our history.......

Unlike you lefty apologists ........

If you aren't ashamed......then why do you keep running off to spend more time out of Britain than you do in it? As so called 'patriots' go, you are a prime example of a hypocritical Brexiter.

How am I a hypocrite? .........

Because you voted for this country to leave the EU.......then promptly run off to spend money in Spain to avoid the rising costs of Brexit British prices. That's hypocrisy. You should be staying here paying the high costs you voted for and inflicted on others who didn't vote to throw themselves off a cliff.

Have I ever said European tourists shouldn't come to the UK????? .......

No, you just didn't want any EU/non-EU migrants coming here. That's what you thought you'd be able to stop but as you've found it's not quite turned out that way. The only people you have pulled the drawbridge up on are British who previously enjoyed border free seamless travel.

Has the cost of rubber for Nun's increased? ..........

Must confess its not a market I follow .......

BTW the number of UK moho owners who spend more than 90 days in Europe must number 10's of 100's of which I'm one.......and I ain't bothered so why are you? ..........

It's about time you put your bottles away and started sobering up.

Why? ........

Because you keep getting drunk and your posts end up as a cluttered mishmash of nonsensical garbage.....not that they are that much better when you're sober.

Your boyfriend hasn't been in to hold your hand either so must have found a job for the afternoon.

Yourself.

Three men i used to work with, all younger than me, now dead through drink. None even got to draw their state pension and the most recent died in June when i was away. My brother-in-law has just lost his life long pal through drink.

It's well worth listening to what Eric Clapton has to say on subject as he speaks from experience. He's long been teetotal now and founded a rehab clinic in Antigua.

Where as you surrender monkeys would much rather buy a pup from the ECJ .............

Just because its got European in the title doesn't mean its any better than ours Barry .........

Hmm, We will see who the surrender monkeys are. I dont notice any of you Brexiteers speaking out vehemently against this terrible deal TM is proposing. On workers rights, regulation and the environment I would trust the EU and ECJ more than I would trust the current Tory party by a country mile. As I said, just look at em! Jeez.

I'm not particularly bothered what the deal is ..........

So long as we leave ........
.

If you Remoaners are so desperate to pay for a bad deal .........

Then so be it .......

But "Theresa the Appeaser" has got to get it through Parliament .......and then get those other 26 countries to agree ..........

Good luck with that Mrs May .........

It ain't over til the Merkel lady signs .............

You should be bothered Dave. Have you looked at the withdrawal agreement? Its completely terrible. It wont just be remainers paying for it either by the way. Its not even leaving either. After everything you have said I cannot believe your not going absolutely bonkers mad about it. I presume you have written to your MP telling them its a disgrace and to reject it.

The EU were never going to give us a better deal out than we had when we were in.
And with a Chaotic Divided 'Government' under the thumb of the DUP, its even worse than I thought it would be.
And of course nothing like we were promised when we voted.
No wonder they won't give us a vote on it before they do it

Same here.

Well they might have to give us a vote on it.

If Parliament vote it down and if No Deal is ruled out as an option, what happens then? If there is no way to renegotiate the only choices are to accept the deal or remain and if parliament have already rejected the deal they are left with the choice of just revoking article 50 or letting the public decide between the deal and remaining in the EU. Does anyone see any other options in that scenario?

To answer Barry's question, yes I have. I've downloaded all 585 pages of it, and read most of it. It is virtually unreadable to me. It gives all the qualifications first, and then gives the clause, so whichever way you try to work, by the time you've read the clause, you've forgotten which qualification applies to which part. You need a tagged paper copy to make sense of it, and I'm not printing off 585 pages of largely white paper to do that!

It is a compromise, aimed at trying to reconcile the irreconcilable rift between those whose emotions say leave the EU at whatever cost, and those reasoning says that staying is best for the UK economy. That is why it fails both on both counts. Being a little bit in isn't the same as being out, and being a little bit out isn't the same as being in.

Have you noticed that whenever a members of the government is asked if the deal is projected to be economically better than being in, they won't answer? They instead try to justify it on political grounds, saying how bitterly divided the country might become were Brexit to be denied. Why is that?

My expectation is that when the figures are released next week, they will show us being worse off economically under the deal than if we ditch Brexit. If I'm right, then all they are arguing for is "peace in our time", in the hope that someone else will be in government at the time people work out that a less buoyant economy means most of them get poorer. So, that's that can kicked a bit further down the road, then!

If the deal is worse than membership, so people will be poorer than they are now, they must be told just that. Leaving them to find out later is a fool's mission, and anyone who thinks drawing a veil over that inconvenient little truth will secure future political peace is seriously deluded.

I think next week might be quite interesting! We get to find out if the Article 50 notification can be withdrawn so that we revert to the status quo ante, and we find out whether all versions of Brexit make us poorer. Oh goody!
