What can we do in way of retribution?

If we leave the EU without an agreement we are being told that there will be all sorts of uncertainties, including suddenly being regarded, for purposes of taking our pets on holiday, by mainland Europe as a high risk country for rabie, even though ours (with Ireland) isthe only part of Europe that is rabies-free.

So I started to think of ways in which we, as a newly independant country, could make life difficult for EU citizens as they land at Dover and elsewhere - can anyone add to my list so far?

  1. French women have to shave their armpits before they can be admitted to UK, to protect us from the well known risk of axillary dandruff and body odour.
  2. French men and women, because of their reputation for poor personal hygiene standards, must shower before entry, the showers provided being a walk-through facility, broadly similar in design to French Pissoirs, hot water being optionally available for a payment of £50 per person.
  3. French men and women, because of their know proclivity for extra-marital affairs and general promiscuity, provide evidence of being screened at an approved specialist clinic, between one and four days before entry, for sexually transmitted disease.
  4. Because of the unreliability of French cars, provide proof of breakdown and repatriation cover by a British Insurer, available for purchase (at extrotionate rates) at the border.

I'm not so sure that blaming Les Francais will help, but Belgian chocolate and Brussels sprouts should be the first casualties for blacklisting!

Stop buying EU made cars, appliances, food, wine - now that might focus their attention if we all did just that - starting NOW!

My post was of course wrtten tongue in cheek but I fear the French (in particular Macron) have seemed to be a source of difficulty in negotiations and a looming threat of vengeful retribution if we do succeed in leaving the EU - so we may well have to face some anti-British initiatives from that quarter, even if there is a negotiated agreement.

It is understandable that negotiations of this kind will inevitably end with last minute brinkmanship and the stakes are really quite high, with the central EU players neither wanting nor believing that the UK will really end up leaving and Theresa May having to stand firmly on our intention to leave (come what may from their antics) so that we will eventually see what the EU guys are made of and will ultimately settle for.

I suspect that there a far more Brits who delight in visiting or living in France than there are Frenchies who would choose to do the reverse. For some reason those Frenchies don’t seem to be enamoured with the climate, the geography or gastronomic experience that awaits them in our Sceptred Isle. I blame our ancestors for just splatting them from time to time rather than conquering them outright. As they didn’t achieve that, the next best thing for me would be to enjoy the freedom of movement that our membership of the EU affords us. However if Brexit goes ahead perhaps we should seriously consider launching an invasion in the hope that the whole of France would become British territory.

Perhaps we should invite the French to invade us, then we could let them win, then we'd become part of metropolitan France, and then, guess what, we'd be back in the EU speaking Franglais. Zut, now zat sound comme un magnifique plan! :-D

Curiously enough I read news item about President Macron wanting a "proper" Euro Army, so the EU could defend itself (or was it assert itself?) against non-EU countries, including the USA - although it did disappear fairly quickly, so maybe the USA was excluded.

We did of course own Calais for many years and if Argentina can claim the Malvinas, why can't we just grab Calais back?  It would be jolly handy to have that toehold on the Continent given how tight for space Dover is. And we now have a much more modern and powerful carrier than the French so we should get stuck in smarting and occupy Calais unilaterally, while we've still got some Royal Marines.

The French are of course a nuclear power but they've only got strategic weapons and no battlefield ones so we'd be OK there.

Vive Calais Anglais!

I rather like Dennis Skinner's idea. Seeing as all foreign tourists come here to see our wonderful Royal Family we should make money out of it. Put 'em in the Millenium Dome, Give 'em a zone apiece, and charge all the foreign tourists to go in and look at them. :-D

I think that driving on our overcrowded roads would be punishment enough for the French.

Not one your best ideas Dave. Good ol’ Blighty be left with a lot of retired folk with fewer people to provide them with their pensions, fund their health service or their social care.

No no Veronica. Daves idea is a brilliant one. I would quite happily while away my days scootering around sunny Provence or up an Alp drinking decent booze and scoffing French cheese at decent prices. Leave the daft old duffers to their own devices. I am sure that nice Mr Macron would welcome all us clever young remoaners and the rest of Europe probably. The Brexiteers will get what they want, an underpopulated country full of purple faced angry codgers and we get to be EU citizens again. Everybody is happy. Where do I sign?

You will have to stay here though. Skeggy and Scarbados for you from now on. No wintering in the Costa's. There wont be any ferries for motorhomes anyway. The Government will have bought them all up to bring in drugs and medicines to look after you all assuming they can find a port that will accept them. You wont have any nurses or carers to administer them though.

Yeah in your dreams Fatty Batty :D .........

The Costa's will need folk like me........especially as Spain has become the new highway to the EU La La Land ;-) ........

So post Brexit this Brit wont be shy about spreading our wealth around among the Spanish, who have yet to wake up to the reality of what their left wing government has done *-) ..........

But I guess with their own Catalan separatist problems to resolve, perhaps their minds were other things?

Glad you have wealth to spread around Dave. Those fines for illegal immigrants / over stayers in Schengen are pretty steep.

Yeah Barry.......when they start hunting down us tourists I'll be the first to let you know ;-) ........

Between €700 - 1000...not to mention deportation, but even a fine goes on record making it extremely difficult to enter any Schengen country. A travel ban is the most severe.

I noticed this year police are taking a more proactive stance than usual on UK reg vehicles and in Romania alone i had four random police roadside checks where previous years they've never bothered. They're gearing up.

I've more chance of wining on my Premium Bonds than I have of getting kicked out off Spain ;-) ...........

Maybe the reason they're checking on UK reg'd vehicles in Romania is to see if they're stolen? :-| .......

Dont drive back through France then. i wonder how the French customs will react when the computer flags up you have overstayed by a month or two and your visa has run out. Maybe the Spanish will turn a blind eye but I wouldnt be so sure about the French. Although having said that, arent the Spanish rozzers a bit keen to dish out fines when they are strapped for cash?

That boast may well come back to haunt you.

Stolen vehicles are everywhere....especially in UK. Some Romanians working in UK will buy a UK reg car, but none would be daft enough to drive a stolen vehicle on UK plates in Romania as it's begging to be stopped.

Romanian police check your documents and record the date/time you were checked so your absence from UK will also be noted. Bulgarian police have always done roadside checks because lots of foreigners don't familiarise themselves with the vignette laws which differ to Romania. The vignette cost is peanuts.....the fines, if caught without one are severe.
