"No one to serve your great British pint" update ... We were expecting to go very hungry and very thirsty in Penrith given the well informed warning on here by the OP but to our pleasant surprise though busy because of the beautiful weather The Board and Elbow managed very well to pull pints and serve food with what sounded like English staff ... Hoping to get back the lakes for a few days in a couple of weeks and then we have a music festival so more updates on the desperate situation to follow

Like I said, Penrith is probably not so badly hit as its a large working town with a large (for Cumbria) "local" population. Did you go in any of the shops or bars? They will also be mainly staffed by locals, you can tell as they all have the same accent. (I can do a great Cumbrian accent by the way). The rest of the Lake District however is a different matter and you can deny there is a problem all you want but 68% of business owners say that there is.

I know you know best as always but just take a look at the Penrith wiki link, concentrate on the opening line about the economy ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrith,_Cumbria ... As for denying there is a problem, I havent ... I have simply offered what I have found out and about and that contradicts the OPs wild, Hollywood claim ... France and Germany seem to have a problem with hospitality workers n'all which you seem to want to ignore so I would "plead" with you as Brian puts it to look with "unbiased" Tory hate goggles and look at the bigger picture

Yes it says "As a small market town relying quite heavily on the tourist trade, Penrith benefits from a mix of some high street chain stores and many small local specialist shops. However, many shops have given way to businesses such as banks, building societies and travel agents."

Its still a working town with a population of 15000+ and very few foreign workers compared to other parts of the lake district. I practically had a second home there for years when I had a boat on Ullswater. I have lots of friends there so I know it well and the people. All the pubs, bars and hotels I used to frequent in the rest of the lake district were predominately staffed by Europeans. I think its something like 47% overall were European staff but in the areas away from the large towns like Penrith, Workington etc that percentage is or was much higher. Thats mainly where the issue now is and its mainly down to one thing, Brexit.

I think thats you accepting Penrith relies "heavily on the tourist trade" ... As for "practically" living in Penrith, my daughter did live in Penrith for 4 years so maybe there aint much you can tell me about the pubs and eating out spots ... You blame supposed staffing shortages here in Blighty on "one thing"' Brexit, does the same apply to France and Germanys hospitality staff shortages???

Ask your daughter then if she agrees with what I said regarding Penrith. I bet she does.

As for France and Germany, well according to your article you linked to it seems during lockdown a lot of workers in hospitality just found better jobs or had a rethink of professions. Thats potentially a double whammy for us then as if less foreign workers are wanting to work in hospitality and they cant come and work here anyway or dont want to due to our hostile environment that Brexit has created then it just makes the problem worse.

Not sure what your point is, you could argue that London, Liverpool, Leeds are all working cities yet they rely heavily on tourists or those visiting for the day ... Your France/Germany/hostile environment/Brexit comment is just silliness ... Its clear you want Brexit to be the issue here for supposed staff shortages and in blinkered Barry world everything gets blamed on the Tories and Brexit

Brexit is the issue here. Its all about geography with places like the lakes. They have next to zero unemployment but the jobs are in places that are too far for Brits to take them on and of course many of them are minimum wage. London, Liverpool and Leeds its not so much of an issue. If you go back through the Brexit wars threads you will find several from myself predicting this exact outcome for places like the Lake District. There will be other industry sectors and locations around the UK also effected.

So my point is, no Brexit no problem. Thats all there is to it.

Like I said previously you want Brexit to be the issue and your final comment confirms that "no Brexit no problem. Thats all there is to it" ... Pointless going on with ya, doesnt change the fact that where I have been there are plenty of folk to pull that "great British pint" regardless of the fairytale claim from the OP

Ah I see, because you got served ok in Penrith which I already explained about there is no problem because of EU Staff shortages because of Brexit. 68% of Cumbrian business owners which is thousands by the way are simply making it up because they are anti Brexit like me. Glad we cleared that up.

Seriously, whats wrong with you??? ... Concentrating just on the lakes in the past few weeks I have been served food and drinks in Penrith, Keswick, Pooley Bridge, Windermere, Derwent Water and Troutbeck Head with no issues ... I am posting up what I have experienced in those places in the lakes and you don't like that I am showing that the wild, Hollywood claim by the OP is just not true, maybe others have had different experiences???

Whats wrong with me?

Can you explain then why over two thirds of lake district business owners are desperately struggling with staff and why they are claiming its mainly because of Brexit? I bet they are all pesky remainers eh? Making it up. Jeez

Chuckle ... Barry ignores I have had no issues getting my "great British pint" and more in the lakes ... Now you seem to be a little confused as you now say lake district business are struggling to employ staff "mainly" because of that nasty Brexit yet only a couple of posts ago you said "no Brexit no problem. Thats all there is to it" ... So your THATS ALL THERE IS TO IT according to lakes business owners isnt actually true ... Like I said previously you want Brexit to be the problem and anything else just isnt Barry ... Hate on

Talking of fairytale claims from the threads OP, I dont recall ever claiming "foreign workers incapable of speaking English" ... BG goes to Hollywood, yet again

Had you learned reading and writing at nursery you'd have understood the post but because you obviously lack the skill to comprehend basic English it's beyond you. You just make yourself look a very silly little boy attempting to twist fm's posts out of context.....you aren't clever enough to do that.

I dont have to be "clever" to show others what youve posted or claimed on here as your posts are there for all to see in black and white ...

Yes my posts are on here for all to see hence the reason everyone can see you selectively quoted just six words from a sentence and tried spinning it so lets have a look at that sentence in full so we have the correct context.

"Apparently the latter is important to Antony for some strange reason he appears to believe foreign workers incapable of speaking English, where in reality they speak better English than he does and in some case will be multi-lingual."

Now, to help you further i've bolded the important words you left out which gives context to exactly what i'd written rather than the selectively edited version you attempted to spin but failed, as usual.

Chuckle. Sounding a bid desperate now, I threw you a bit of a bone there eh? Yes covid may have played a small part but ultimately its down to Brexit. Even Dim Tim Martin now realises that. The man that campaigned very publicly for a hard no deal Brexit and exit of the single market which of course ended the free movement of a lot of EU Bar staff now says he now backs a "reasonably liberal" immigration system. You couldnt make it up. I really hope he his hit hard in the wallet and I have no sympathy whatsoever for people like him.

Few Brexiteers can see his hypocrisy either. I've never been in one but apparently it's cheap prices? If so they'll have to start paying more for their pint if they want British bar staff.

I went in one a couple of years back while out Christmas shopping in Darlington and waiting for my wife. Got bored so braved the local Brexit HQ Wetherpoons. They even had Brexit beer mats! It was grim. Full of red faced angry looking blokes. I just pretended to look all grumpy and Brexity although I almost ordered a Gin and Tonic which would have been a fatal mistake.

Hate on

So you have gone from blaming Brexit 100% nailed on to covid might have had something to do with it??? ... Chuckle, und you want folk to take you seriously

I dont think I have had a Kebab for maybe five years and certainly not in the UK. I do like the occasional bit of Fish from our award winning chippy though.

As for you comments above re Covid, clutching at straws springs to mind. Just admit it, here we have a prime example of exactly what damage ending free movement of people has done. Why else would Dim Tim now be crying and whinging on about a "Liberal immigration policy" after he campaigned so hard for the exact opposite?

Well lets remember according to you all Brexit voters are thick so "Dim Tim" wont escape your insults will he ... As for "Exploiting" his staff almost a third of his 40.000 staff are shareholders in his company, staff have a free meal and drink if they work more than 6 hours and his company has won the top employee award many times ... Maybe you can explain where the "Exploiting" bit comes in or is it just your usual bitterness leaking through???

That comes across as very angry ... Do you have a mobile number she can ring and discuss with you, maybe she can during the conversation give you the number of the pub she visited for you to ring and discuss with them any staffing issues ... If the weather is fine Sunday we are back at the lakes with the kayak so we will be having a meal later in Penrith which I will comment on in your hate thread, would you like the number of the pub??? ... Mmm ... I have just explained to you how we can go about that but you dont like it ... Tell you what, give me your mobile number which I unlike you will promise not to disclose your personal details on here and come Sunday I can FaceTime you in the pub we eat in and you will see for yourself just how difficult it is to get served that great British pint ... Couldn't be easier ... Is that a deal yes or no, quite simple and then you can post up the video on here

We already have the evidence from 67% of Cumbrian business owners. Perhaps some might be disgruntled Remainers eh? Although five out of six regions in Cumbria voted to leave amazingly. However because Mr Birdbrain and his family managed to get a burger and a pint of Sheeps Droppings Ale from a town on the outskirts of the lake district they must be making it all up then.

You don't need anyones phone number to post video evidence of lots of bar staff all lined up ready and waiting as your wife walks in. You can post it on any sm platform.

Theres only you asking for evidence princess and I dont know how to post videos up off my phone so stop stalling ... Your squirming and its an uncomfortable sight and I like how youve gone all Hollywood all of a sudden with "lots of bar staff lined up ready", chuckle rather than just the normal bar staff ... Mobile number please

Listen up puffball......you're well capable of trawling Twitter for far right extremist bile you've posted in the past so don't give me that nonsense. You're always demanding "proof" from other fm's for everything but the minute the boots on the other foot you're crying every excuse in the book.
