Brian Kirby Posted May 11, 2020 Share Posted May 11, 2020 I was doing a little light research today into the SARS coronavirus outbreak of 2002-04 (the precursor of SARS Cov-19). :-) It seems this first arose in leaf nosed bats, then passed to horseshoe bats, and from them to Civets, before passing to humans at meat markets in China's Yunnan province, where the Civets were sold as meat. (Civets https://tinyurl.com/ya5q3hfb are carnivorous, vaguely cat-like mammals, native to tropical Asia and Africa and, like the Pangolins that carried the SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused the current pandemic, were transported to China live for local sale and slaughter.) While looking at the Wiki above on Civets I spotted a reference to Civet Coffee, or Kopi luwak, and followed the Wink link to here: https://tinyurl.com/82mgl78 I'll leave you to read the rest, and to imagine who first thought of that, and why!
