Just after a bit of advice, if anyone can help please. I have a talbot express 2.5 TD which when driven at 50 to 60 mph leads to the turbo pressure light coming on. I was told that this was the waste gate sticking and would do no harm, however it would do some damage if i were to rev the engine this hard when the vehicle was standing. Can anyone confirm this and is there a way to free the waste gate, and if so where is it located. Many thanks Pete H

Hi Pete

Without knowing what the light is for it is difficult to say - It is probably a light to indicate over boost.

You may want to fit a boost gauge to see what is going on. As an add-on they are worth it in my view. Without a waste gate the turbo would spool itself up to destructive speeds and so the speed and so the boost pressure is governed by the waste gate actuator.

If the waste gate is set of open at a certain pressure then a sticking waste gate could be causing "boost creep" where when running the boost pressure creeps up over the set limit and hence the light goes on. If you have a gauge fitted as well as or instead of the light you could tell if the boost was running at the correct level.

If you were not getting any boost pressure then the thing would be a real dog to drive (no power - no turbo boost) but you do not indicate this?

The problem is that there are many things that can cause this from a faulty actuator/actuator spring to a leak.

If you take it to a diesel turbo specialist they should be able to test what is happening.

One of the most common problems is old tubing collapsing. Often just replacing the tubing cures the problem

Hope this helps

Hi

We had exactly this problem on our old Talbot as well, the previous owner had been told it was normal and never bothered with it but couldn't get the speed above 60mph. A friend of ours had also had a similar problem on his 'van and told us of this so we were able to get it sorted before we bought the van. The waste gate sticking is a symptom of 'sleepy vehicle syndrome', ie vehicles that are not run very often, ie motorhomes. Any garage should be able to free it off and it shouldn't cost you more than £30.00 or so to do. If you have a good garage pop in to see them, if they know what they are doing they will have heard of it before. Once we'd had it sorted we got over 70 mph no trouble and that was on the 1.9TD!

I wouldn't start adding other bits and pieces until they've checked this and confirmed whether or not it is actually the cause, but I'd put money on it (I'm a Yorkshire lass so I's careful wiv me muney!!!). Let us know what happens please.
