Duetto V Symbol

Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums, Graham.

Unfortunately it isn’t straightforward to provide a definitive answer, as Auto-Sleepers (A-S) has used the “Duetto” and “Symbol” names across a long period of time and for significantly different models.

“Duetto” has always been built on a rear-wheel-drive Ford panel-van, beginning in the mid-1990s using a Transit Mk 4 base and ending production around 2008 when the Transit Mk 7 was being employed. Early Duettos could have been petrol-fuelled but most Duettos will be diesel. Automatic transmission was an option until about 2006.

“Symbol” began to be produced in the late-1990s and the model-name continues to be used by A-S today. The base was/is a front-wheel-drive Peugeot Boxer panel van with manual transmission only. Early models could have been offered with a petrol-fuelled motor, but the norm will be a diesel.

A similar question was asked in 2010

As you’ll see, to obtain useful feed-back you’ll need to say what year(s) of Duetto/Symbol production you are interested in.

You might also try asking about this on the Auto-Sleepers Owners Forum

as this is dedicated to A-S leisure-vehicles and has a specific forum section for “Van Conversions”.

back in 2009 we had this choice and went for the duetto as it was a ford and a better drive, was not keen on the peugeot at all.

so vehcile wise duetto better, but looking at the habitation the symbol was better.

we found too the duetto was better too for wild camping as it does not look so obvious as a camper like the symbol.

I faced the same choice in 2004 and opted for the Symbol with the Peugeot 2.0 hdi and it worked well but I found it no more economical or better to drive than a compact coachbuilt like a Nueveo and with considerably less space and more compromises inside.

Both Duetto and Symbol are good vans for their size and if size matters for you then best to drive and suss out one of each before deciding bearing in mind that the newer you come the better and a wee bit larger they tend to become although the interiors remain more or less unchanged. You might also consider a VW Trident - if you can find one at a sensible price - for a different take in a very compact van?

We had some friends that had a Duetto and they loved it covering thousands of miles all over Europe in it - but they were somewhat less bulky than I and were better able to cope with the compact interior!
