Nothing to avoid - lots to see. If you take the coast route then the Cinque Terre is fabulous for at least a full day. We followed the coast from France right around, very quiet and fairly slow going but plenty of lovely villages and towns to visit.

At Pisa many use the campsite but we used the aire GPS N 43 43 43.9 E 10 23 18.16. Its barrier controlled and the warden is there for a couple of hours morning then again evening. If he isn't there buy a parking ticket for 1 euro to prove when you arrived (he will deduct from the overnight price). No loos but has water / waste is secure and just minutes from city centre and approx 20 mins walk from the tower.

We don't speak Italian but we did learn the basics for lease, thank you etc - it goes a long way with the locals. Before we went we heard horror stories about the driving - speak as we find and we didn't find the driving difficult or aggressive anymore than anywhere else.

We found plenty of free sosta - but unlike aires most did not have electric, water or loos.

Hope you have a fabulous trip, we loved Italy

Thanks for the info. Really looking forward to the trip. Hadn't thought of going along the coast but I'll look at that way now. You have a good trip where ever you are heading.
