Wingpete
Why is it that when cooking those "boil in the bag" kipper fillets, they always come out as mush ? I have tried all the supermarket brands, and followed the instructions diligently, but no difference. When trying to separate one fillet from another after cooking, they just disintegrate. The other kipper fillets sold without the enclosing plastic bag cook fine. I prefer the whole kippers normally, but when venturing away in the 'van, find the fillets less hassle to carry and cook in the 'van. And the tinned versions are even worse. :-S All oily. Must have my kippers, at least two a week. :-D
JohnP
We very often have fresh kippers when away. Cook them on the barbecue outside to avoid the smell in the van. Lay them on foil to save on the cleaning afterwards. Like you we have never had much success with the boil in the bag variety.
Wingpete
I like to try them out on my Continental friends. I tell them it is a English delicacy, and indoctrinate them into enjoying them. You should see their faces at first bite. ;-)
Lizzy
Have you tried buying them separately, freezing them singlely and putting them in a bag so that they can be removed ready for cooking? Waitrose sell Craster kippers ......... when in Northumberland last year Hubby bought some from Craster and others from Seahouses. I don't like them due to the smell they leave behind but he loves 'em. There is also a smokery in Cley next Sea on the North Norfolk Coast. Wingpete
Now there's a sensible answer. Thanks Lizzy. Must nip out to the supermarket tonight, as leave for France in morning.
