Peugeot Boxer Elddis Motorhome Electrics

Recent purchase of the above, I have fitted a new leisure battery, BUT, the 12 volt lights in the van appear to run down quickly. When plugged into site 240v electrics, the TV, Kettle, etc work okay but the 12v lights do not, they quickly go dim unless a fully charged battery is fitted.

I am a newcomer to all this. There is a Zig control panel and the van is an older 1998/99 model. The Zig panel has the usual pump, x2 light switches x2 auxiliary switches. There is a separate switch below this row which simply comes on with red indicator light but appears to do nothing and below this another switch, marked by the previous owner 240volt / Ims heater.

Can anyone give me a clue what could be wrong please.. Am I missing some kind of switch over. Is the battery not being charged when plugged into the site mains electric? Is there a transformer or something I need to locate or change? I am trying to get to know the van but this is a mystery to me at the moment.

Regards to all Norm.

Welcome to the Out&AboutLive forums, Norm.

It could be helpful if you are able to say which model of Elddis motorhome you own - also if you could say which model of Zig control-panel is fitted.

Zig normally showed the model-number on the front of the panel and the following link shows a selection. However, given the age of your motorhome, your panel may not be listed. Some Zig models are just control-panels, while others incorporate a battery-charger.

These are a couple of 2005 forum discussions that may help

It’s evident that mains electrical power is entering your motorhome when the vehicle is connected to a campsite electric hook-up (EHU). However, from what you say, it’s quite likely that your motorhome’s leisure-battery is not being charged when the motorhome is on EHU. (Confirm this by checking the voltage at the leisure-battery’s terminals with a multimeter. Then connect the motorhome to an EHU and check the leisure-battery’s voltage again. if the battery is receiving charge the voltage reading should have risen to close to 14V.)

It should be expected that your motorhome will have an onboard battery-charger, though one never knows...

I suspect that, from your description of of the Zig control-panel, the charger will be separate rather than integrated into the panel and, if that’s correct, the charger should look something like this

Motorhome manufacturers do not standardise on where they install equipment, so the charger might be in a wardrobe, or under a seat, or in a kitchen-unit, or concealed behind a removable panel in a high-level locker. (Pretty much anywhere, in fact!)

Are you in a position to contact the previous owner of your Elddis? There may be nothing actually wrong, and the apparent failure to charge the battery may simply be because there’s a vital On/Off switch somewhere that needs switching on.
