A class speaker upgrade

Hi,

I am looking to improve the audio sound quality on my A class motorhome. I don't want a ghetto blaster and the sound level is perfectly adequate even on low volume - I just want a bit more bass (or even SOME bass). Unfortunately I don't have anywhere convenient to mount a sub-woofer box (no space under the seats either).

At the moment, I have two 100mm 2-way coaxial speakers in the front (facing upwards) and another two in the rear cupboards facing downwards. These are Visaton PX10 which I gather may not be the best, but not the worst either.

I have taken out the existing speakers and there is enough space to fit 130mm speakers in the dash and in the cupboards. I was thinking of upgrading the speakers to some JBL GTO 529 (I obviously need to enlarge the existing cut-outs).

If the bass is still non existent, I thought of trying a structure-borne driver unit mounted behind a panel on the dash or on a cupboard wall.

Do you think I would hear an improvement with these slightly bigger speakers? The JBL ones seem to have good reviews, but are there others that would give better bass?

Has anyone any experience with these structure-borne drive units? http://www.visaton.de/index.php/en/products/drivers-accessories/structure-borne-drivers/bs-130-4-ohm

You seem expert on these matters, and the sound from speakers is a matter of taste. A mate sold all his top high range hi-fi kit. Went around all the shows, then bought the same outfit again. His wife was not impressed.

I'm happy with a blue tooth soundbar and woofer, don't even remember the make!

I know it’s a long way from you but K and M Acoustics of Wigan are absolutely brilliant for bespoke work , they fitted a sub woofer in my Elise to give u an idea of what they r capable of , they also fitted my Alpine CarPlay headunit in my motorhome, recommended .

My 6m A-class has two Visaton FX10-2 speakers [slightly more expensive than your PX10s] in the cab below the dash, two Visaton Exciter EX60S in the drop down bed which then act as a speaker and two in the rear panel acting as a speaker.

My Visatons do not get impressive write ups but they do a sufficient job - probably too well - for us. Certainly having two large panels in the van acting as speakers was an ear opener. The link you provided suggest that you are looking at a similar product to the Exciter although yours are about double the price and presumably twice as good.

I have no knowledge of hifi other than where the on button is located. I'm told I am tone deaf! The information above came from Hymer when I was looking for my speakers. My wife is not a rock chick so bass comes some way down her list as purity of sound is her preference. I'm told I am tone death!

I presume your media player cannot improve the bass to your required standard.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I realize that sound quality is quite subjective and as I said, I don't want a boom box. I have a Bose bluetooth mini speaker that has sufficient bass for me but I wanted something more permanent for traveling (I amazed how Bose can get so much bass out of a small unit).

My wife is also tone deaf whereas I like a decent sound system. We have had several "discussions" about this when she has rearranged the furniture and put a couple of the speakers next to each other in a corner behind a sofa!

It was interesting to hear that the EX60 exciter was used instead of a speaker. I thought these were only for bass frequencies. They are easy to fit so might try one before changing all the speakers.

Unfortunately I do not have an audio car specialist anywhere near me to get some advise. I obviously do not want to spend the time and money to get something that is only marginally better. I will be at the Malvern show next week so may find someone there.

Is the problem with the speakers or the radio / amplifier? Changing speakers in my last van gave no appreciable improvement in sound quality, so I came to the conclusion was that the weak link was the radio.

I never did get round to changing it, but the one in my current van is adequate.

 • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick update on this.

I changed the front speakers to the GTO529 I mentioned, and the sound has vastly improved. I didn't need to add a subwoofer as the bass is now perfectly acceptible.

I think part of the problem was that the holes for the original 100mm speakers were too large (should have been slightly smaller than 100mm). There was a 2-3mm air gap around the speaker case which will significantly reduce the bass sound.

I had to enlarge the holes in the dash to accomodate the new 130mm speakers which was not an easy job.
