Airbag Warning Light

2015 X290. Went to fill up with fuel yesterday afternoon ready for our trip up to the Peak District and suddenly the airbag warning light is on followed by message on dash display followed a few minutes later by 20 seconds of warning beeps. Switched off and restarted a couple of times. We don't swivel the seats on our van so not an issue with connectors. Connected seats belts and disconnected them but no joy so off to Huttons the local Fiat main dealer in Weston-super-Mare.

They were busy with diagnostic machine on another car so I had to wait for half an hour. Then came the bad news. It is the Airbag ECU. More bad news the vehicle is 3 months out of the 3 year warranty. Further bad news they cost a fortune and even further bad news they used the only one they had on the shelf that morning on another vehicle. The service manager went away for a few minutes and came back with good news. Fiat were prepared to fund the replacement one and I just had to fund the diagnostic and fitting charge which would then give me further 2 year warranty on the part. Even better news the service manager said he could get one on the overnight delivery and he could fit it at 8.30 am next day whilst I waited. All went smoothly and 9.05 am I was on my way up north earlier than I would have from home.

I know these things shouldn't happen at 3yrs 3 months and 11k miles but I would like to say a big thank you to Huttons of Weston-super-Mare for giving superb customer service.

For info to anyone reading this post in the future if you have an airbag SRS ECU failure out of warranty there are alternatives to paying Fiats prices.

Two recent threads give details of companies specialising in the repair of airbag ECU's at significantly less cost:

Hi, Out of interest what was the cost?

Pete, the cost was £86 (incl VAT) which was made up of the diagnostic labour charge and the fitting charge.

Not cheap then you never visit a main dealer unless you have a triple A borrowing rating.

Hi Keith. Good of you to quote this advice. I had picked up on this possibility on the forum whilst I was waiting for the diagnostic check to be done. If I had had to pay some ridiculous price for a genuine Fiat replacement I was going to explore this route.

Thanks

John
