Alhambra

Hi,

We are looking to visit Alhambra in April.

I am struggling to find anywhere to stop overnight near by.

Does any know of a place near the palace?

Also does anybody know what the parking is like at the site.

Our MH is 7.5M

TIA

The Alhambra has its own motorhome parking area, at the junction of Paseo de la Sabica and Avenue Santa Maria de la Alhambra.

Not sure if you can stay overnight here. We stayed at a wonderful ACSI site about 8 miles away - Camping Las Lomas at Guejar Sierra.

Hope this helps,

You will have to buy Alhambra tickets well in advance of your trip as they are more often than not fully booked close to when you want to visit. There is an ACSI siite a few miles away from Granada and you can bus your way in which in my view is by far the best way to visit the Alhambra.

In 2005 we used Camping Hotel Sierra Nevada, which is in Granada - see link here: http://tinyurl.com/y5jhrw85 GPS N37.19831 W3.61154. Large Alcampo super almost opposite.

It was quite reasonable when we visited, so we spent 3 nights there and had a good wander around.

At that time they could pre-book timed tickets for the Alhambra, which was well worth doing, as the queue for those who hadn't pre booked stretched for miles!

I'd contact the site first, as it seems they have the builders in at present doing a refurb!

The Alhambra is about 1.5 miles as the crow flies from the site. Cathedral (not one of the most spectacular) similar distance and not far from Alhambra. It is well secured, so even if it is only tolerable for one night, it is probably the only overnight stopping place within walking distance of the Alhambra.

Looks really handy for the city ...as you say you need to book the Alhambra and it looks like they are taking bookings only for April now ..hotels seem to be able to get earlier dates probably been allocated tickets ,

This is true ..... BUT ..... every evening at midnight they release a few hundred extra tickets. We didn't plan our trip to Granada very well and did not expect to get into the Alhambra. However, the campsite manager told me of this system, and at midnight I was on the Alhambra booking webpage (constantly refreshing), and the tickets suddenly appear. With credit card ready I snapped up two and we got the full tour the next day! You have to be very quick because they go in an instant.

It was a good tip!

We stayed at Camping Reina Isabel in the village of Zubia.

ACSI campsite number 3036 (2019 handbook). It's also got a good onsite family run restaurant, bit quirky but OK for a couple of nights.

We booked online two days in advance and just secured an afternoon timed entry slot on the palace tour. Be warned, the website is poor and not easy to understand in English, but persevere and you will get the tickets. You must take the credit card you paid with and an ID (Driving licence) to collect the tickets at the entry desks. Lots of strict rules due to touts buying up the tickets.

Getting to the Alhambra by public bus is possible from this campsite but it's two bus journeys with a 20 minute walk in the middle, which is not a good idea after 3 hours walking around the Alhambra.

So we used a taxi both ways which was not much more than the bus fares, even picked us up from our campsite pitch.

Eat before you go in as the on site food is predictably poor and pricey. Some half decent restaurants opposite the entrance gate.

Not a place to visit if you have any difficulty walking on slopes or climbing stairs!

Hope that helps.

"Getting to the Alhambra by public bus is possible from this campsite but it's two bus journeys with a 20 minute walk in the middle, which is not a good idea after 3 hours walking around the Alhambra."

This information is incorrect in my experience. The bus I caught from the ACSI campsite (the site on the mountain overlooking the reservoir/lake) took me to the edge of the City and a 30 minute walk later I got to the Alhambra. Incidentally many campsites have the ability to book tickets but my site was unable to book me due to heavy demand. In the end I decided to go there anywhere and I was fortunate enough to meet a couple outside who gave me tickets for the gardens which also gave me access to one of the buildings.

We stayed at Camping Reina Isabel and got the tickets from the site office the day before. The bus to Granada stopped outside the site entrance and dropped us off in the town centre, about a 20 min walk to the Alhambra itself (there was a free shuttle bus up the hill to the Alhambra entrance, but we walked anyway).

Clearly this isn't the same site as we stayed on. Still it's a 30 minute walk (each way) to the bus service.

The other contributor confirms the 20 minute walk that we decided not to take. :-D

We were there in May last year and decided to stay over night in the MH carpark at the Alhambra as we had fairly early timed tickets for the following morning.

There were about 8 other vans parked up so there was plenty of space. Extortionate prices for nothing more than a few waste bins, but it was only a 10 min walk down to the Alhambra. They charge by the minute (equivalent to about 3 euros/ hour) but was "only" 30 euros for the day low season and 55 euros June - Sept in 2018 !!!

We ended up buying an escorted tour (paid about 50 euros each) as the standard tickets (about 14 euros each) were fully booked for about 3 weeks ahead.

The escorted tour prices vary wildly (some other people on the same tour paid 150 euros for the same ticket and they had booked months ahead), so shop around.

Thanks for the help everybody.

I just checked the web site and there are no general day tickets available in April or May.

We may have a look at the site at 00:01 when we are near by to see if any come available.

Looks like we will have to put this on our things to do next time list.

Thanks again.

If you leave it until 00.01 they will all be gone! You want to be on the website at 23.58 and refreshing every 10 secs - after all, their time might be set just slightly different to yours!

Have credit card in your hand.

Good luck

PJay - 2019-03-18 11:48 AMWe Went a few years ago now, but personally , I thought it very disappointing . Not worth the money to get in.PJay

I must say Pauline I agree with you. IMHO there are many more interesting old buildings & gardens in the UK. Having said that the view at dusk from the Jewish quarter looking out over the Alhambra is pretty spectacular. Cheers,
