We have just booked an inclusive (ferry and site for 5 nights £96) to Isle of Wight - never been there and would love advice on where to visit etc - especially good walks for dogs (have two yorkies!) ... not going until Sept but looking forward to this! Thanks in advance, Ana xx

Hi Ana we did a similar deal through Red Funnel/Whitecliffe bay site at Easter and had a great time. No problems whatsoever apart from soft earth(!) and you don't need info really as there are loads of marketing publications available free on the ferries. Also you can do everything on the whole island in a week easy. If you want to see some of our pics, send me your email address and I'll send them to you. have a good time-Mike

HiMike - great to hear from someone who has actually stayed at Whitecliffe Bay ---- wondered what you meant by soft earth? Looking forward to this but it's always good to hear that someone has enjoyed it.. thank you for replying! How far to the beach from the site? Ana xx

Hi Ana-Soft earth = I got stuck! It had been very wet though before we got there and I knew better than my wife where to pitch....! However, site is very good, beach is about 5 mins or so from tourer park through residential park and the clifftop walk is lovely if bracing. Good pub on site and also club if you like them. Facilities were 1st class and staff were lovely. Try to pitch up on right above shop as there are hard standings there but be careful if you pull off someone may take your pitch!

YES For the last 2 Easters we went with the camper (previous B&B) In 2004 we used one of the all inclusive packages offered by Red Funnel and stayed at the Southlands Caravan Park. For us it was all to "twee" with rules for just about everything. Only park one way round etc. Posh flowers, imaculate facilities. Not us at all. This year we stayed at Compton Farm. Much more our style, Park where you want and how you want. If you get stuck we have lots of tractors. Here are some notes I did for it :- Compton Farm, near Freshwater Isle of Wight Compton Farm is some 400 acres of National Trust land and the present family have farmed cattle on this land since at least 1928. Access to the site is off the Military Road (A3055) between Freshwater Bay and Brighstone where just near a bend in the road a car park, used by both walkers and surfers, marks the start of the third of a mile long metalled lane, preceded by a cattle grid, leading to the farmhouses. Situated close to the farm house are twelve fully equipped holiday chalets. Nearby are the facilities and were more than adequate to provide basic needs. We found them very clean and included toilets, showers, inside and outside washing places, and a coin operated laundry. Hot water came out of the taps marked red. A short walk and you enter an adjacent 20 acre grassed field (Fig 66) which is set in the rolling countryside and has magnificent views in many directions. The maximum number of pitches you will find in these 20 acres is 28, that’s a lot of space each even if full! And if you park where suggested you will find a level area. It’s worth noting that the farms camping permit excludes trailer caravans, so tents or motor homes are all you are likely to find. A public footpath passes through the farm which leads over Westover Down, Brighstone Down, towards Shorewell and further on. The Island is riddled with a network of Footpaths, Bridleways and Byways. There are acres upon acres to explore on foot. For us with our two Monkey bikes the whole of the Tennyson Way was a joy to explore with it signed as a By-Way. Even the few ramblers and locals we encountered were not phased by our motors but quite amused by them A gentle saunter down the farm lane and across the road takes you to a steep climb down some steps and onto a massive beach where those who know what to look for, go fossil hunting. You can enter this beach one end and exit at the other into another larger parking area with a very welcome ice cream van. Surfers with their perfect physiques frequent this beach regularly all year round! .There are some local pubs within walking or cycling distance if you wish to eat out. For that special treat out you can partake of the inch thick fresh crab sandwiches at Steephill Cove. This is a simple no frills site set in a rural environment and operated by warm and friendly people as a means to subsidise the activities of the farm. If you want mains hookup, shops, marked pitches and entertainments laid on then this is not the place for you, but if you want to lay in bed listening to the sound of the waves landing on the beech or to see nocturnal activities only by the light of the moon and stars then you will love it. Its safe, tranquil and a beautiful location to come back to at the end of the day. It’s also totally children friendly with 20 acres to work off their energy in. If you stay here over Easter then on every Easter Monday the farm is the centre for a “Steam up” and ploughing competition. This is a big event that lasts just the one afternoon but well worth attending.
