BLUE SMOKE over 70mph - Fiat Ducato 2.3L Diesel

Hi,

For the past year I've been having a strange and intermittent blue smoke issue with my self build 2012 Fiat Ducato 2.3L diesel.

It starts perfectly, and runs with NO smoke under 60mph. Running about town or on the motorway, as long as I stay under 60mph, no smoke.

After a couple of minutes of running at 70mph or over, blue smoke comes out of the exhaust.

The blue smoke pumps out the exhaust for a minute or so, then gone. Doesn't come back the entire journey.

Can anyone shed any light or have had a similar issue?

I think Blue smoke is oil getting into the engine but no idea why it only happens at that speed.

Really appreciate any insight.

Hi All,

ITS ALL BEEN SORTED!!!

Some advice from my mechanic was to try some fuel and turbo cleaner which I bought at Halfords.

So . . .

I used one bottle on the 1/4 tank of fuel.

Drove, Waited a week. Issue still there.

Filled half the tank and added 2 bottles.

Drove, waited a week. Issue still there.

Filled another half tank, 2 bottles.

Issue almost gone, but happened after driving for 30mins at 70mph rather than the usual issue

As soon as I hit 70mph.

Then, full tank, 1 bottle and Hey Presto!!!

The tank is almost empty, running most journeys over 70mph and no issue.

Happy Days!!!!!

:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Good news using the fuel additive.

Every 6 weeks when our minibuses/ midi coaches go in for safety checks a bottle of fuel additive is added.

On top of that we run a bus quite empty a fill with Shell premium.

We now do this after some turbo issues and Smokey engines.

It seems to be helping and I’m sure making a difference.

I also do this with my MH.

Totally agree Den.

I’m doing the same. I stopped using the cheapest supermarket fuel and will run the tank to as close to

empty as possible.

I’ll take your lead and will add cleaner after every few tanks.

I think the issue comes from running the van mostly around town, 30mph and short distances.

Great excuse to get out for a blast down to the coast ;)

Don't know about you lot, but I normally keep my speed to 64 :-D or maybe as much as 67 8-) set on the cruise control. Can count on the fingers of one hand the times I've been over 70 . :-> That's in the m/h. Normal car (XK8) might be a different story :-S

My advice is a) start saving up for a new turbocharger and b) keep your speed within the national speed limit.

Mike

Totally agree Mike. My suspicion was that it was the turbo charger and had the fuel cleaner not solved the issue, that would have been my next option.

I’m sticking between 68-72mph lol.

No cruise control for me sadly.
